The Pittsburgh Steelers' approaches to both the wide receiver and quarterback positions have been quite interesting over the course of the last few years. The team was thought to have finally put together a strong one-two punch after trading for DK Metcalf, but dealing George Pickens came not too long after, which ruined hopes that fans had of the duo playing alongside one another. Rumors have swirled for months about General Manager Omar Khan making one more aggressive move to add to the positional group, and as roster cutdowns are set to occur on Tuesday, the front office in the Steel City may be ready to strike.

As teams across the league get set to shrink their respective rosters to 53 players, trades often occur because organizations want to get any kind of value out of someone that may not be sticking around. Additionally, certain franchises have individuals requesting to be dealt because of ongoing contractual issues. According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, Khan and co. are currently keeping a very close eye on several happenings around the NFL.

Terry McLaurin signed a huge three-year extension with the Washington Commanders on Monday, so he is no longer a name being floated around, but certain playmakers such as Jakobi Meyers remain unhappy with their respective situations. It shouldn't come as a shock to anyone if Khan is on the phone and attempting to get a deal done prior to Tuesday's deadline.

It remains to be seen what kind of contributor the Steelers could be looking for. It could be one more guy for depth purposes, or a big name that has the ability to make a massive difference for the offense. Overall, Pittsburgh's decision-makers have not been shy about making the roster better in 2025, so the team popping up in Russini's reporting is far from surprising.

One thing that certainly helps the Steelers in this scenario is bargaining chips. The organization is currently expected to have 12 overall selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, so putting together a nice package for a trade partner won't be hard to do. The complex piece to the puzzle is finding something that both franchises are comfortable with.

The Steelers could also decide to wait until closer to the trade deadline in the regular season to make a deal, just as they did in 2024, when Mike Williams was acquired from the New York Jets. That didn't end up making a big impact, but Pittsburgh has not been able to avoid the news cycle when it comes to wide receivers for what seems like two full years. There's no reason to believe that one final splash is off of the table internally.

There will be plenty of time to evaluate the roster and necessary additions after the rosters are cut to 53 players, but if Pittsburgh wants a certain player in the fold prior to Tuesday afternoon, then Khan will need to act quickly. It's also possible that the organization waits until the cuts happen, only to follow up with a signing a player in the coming days.

Steelers Still May Just Be 1 Pass Catcher Away From Serious Contention In AFC

Pittsburgh has a strong tight end room, veteran quarterback, and versatility with the running back group, but wide receiver remains a mystery because of the names on the depth chart. If Khan is able to pull off just one more deal, it could catapult the franchise into an being an AFC favorite. As Russini noted, Khan is expected to be lurking and ready to strike if something makes sense.
