Steelers' May Have Strong Interest In WR Jakobi Meyers After Call Was Made To Las Vegas

The Pittsburgh Steelers are finalizing their final roster for the 2025 NFL season, but General Manager Omar Khan could still be looking around the NFL to improve the team. There are some clear areas on the depth chart that could be upgraded, while the franchise would specifically like to add a strong second wide receiver. Pittsburgh can do this by combing through players that were waived as rosters throughout the league were cut down on Tuesday, or Khan can look for a potential trade partner to bring in some additional help.

DK Metcalf is the clear number one wide receiver, but behind him in the room is Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson. Austin has been battling an injury and missed the majority of training camp, while Wilson is entering his second season after appearing in just one game in 2024. It is hard to rely on either Austin or Wilson at this juncture, which is why Pittsburgh could look to add a player like Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who reportedly requested a trade this week.

NFL Insider Adam Schefter appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, where he stated one team has called the Raiders about Meyers.

"My understanding is the Raiders had one team reach out to them," Schefter said. "They wanted the Raiders to pay some of the $11 million salary, and the Raiders are not willing to do that. And they're not looking to deal him. So, Jakobi Meyers is going to be there barring something unforeseen happening. They could decide a few games in that he's not happy, he's not behaving well, but they don't want to trade him. They see him as a productive player, he's a really good player."

Schefter did not specify which team reached out to the Raiders about trading for Meyers, but it sounds like something Khan would do. Especially the part of the call where the team asked for part of Meyers' salary to be paid for by the Raiders. Khan is a cap genius, so trying to get that to be a part of the deal sounds like something the Pittsburgh general manager would do.

Meyers began his career with the New England Patriots, and he has had questionable quarterback play throughout his entire career aside from his rookie season when he caught passes from Tom Brady. Since then, he has been catching passes from Cam Newton, Mac Jones, Gardnew Minshew, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Aidan O'Connell. Despite those names that he has played with, he has still found ways to be extremely productive as an undrafted wide receiver.

The veteran wide receiver had his best season in 2024 as he eclipsed 1,000 yards for the first time. He has recorded over 800 yards in each of the last four seasons while scoring 20 touchdowns during that time. His production cannot be denied, and it shows why he is a player the Raiders might be unwilling to part ways with. He is exactly what the Steelers might be looking for in a second wide receiver as he is a great route runner with reliable hands.

Steelers May Be Unwilling To Give Out An Extension If A Trade Is Executed

Part of the reason Meyers wants out of Las Vegas is because he is entering the final season of his contract. He wants an extension, but Las Vegas and his team could not come to an agreement. If the Steelers were the team that called and asked for part of his salary to be paid for by the Raiders in 2025, it is hard to imagine they would be willing to give out an extension after completing a trade. The contractual side of this could hurt Meyers' trade value for Las Vegas, which is another reason they may want to keep him.
