The Pittsburgh Steelers have been thin at wide receiver for the better parts of the last two seasons. Prior to the 2024 season, the fan base was clamoring for the organization to make a trade at the position, but nothing ever materialized after months of trying. Changes were made at wide receiver during the 2025 offseason as the franchise acquired DK Metcalf via trade and then parted ways with George Pickens, but the outlook on the room remains similar. Fans were hoping to see some last minute additions to the roster, but things are looking bleak in that department.

Going into the 2025 season, the five wide receivers on the active roster are Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, and Ben Skowronek. Metcalf is the clear top dog, while Austin has been battling an injury and Wilson is preparing for his first legitimate taste of NFL action after only getting five snaps in 2024. Miller is a burner that can get down the field, while Skowronek is more of a special teams player. The options behind Metcalf have some questions surrounding them, and the depth in the room overall is not great. Insider Mark Kaboly provided some bad news for fans, as Pittsburgh seems content with that current group.
As of right now, the Steelers are not pursuing any wide receiver in free agency or a trade. They wanted MVS on PS, but he chose to go on SF PS instead due to injuries to SF receiver room. They are content going into the season with Calvin Austin and Roman Wilson.

Kaboly believes that the organization is not looking at any players either through free agency or through a potential trade, which means those five receivers are who will be active on game day against the New York Jets in the season opener. Pittsburgh had hosted veteran free agent Gabe Davis on two visits, but he no longer seems to be an option.

Metcalf is going to be Aaron Rodgers' favorite target at wide receiver, and Austin took a great step forward in 2024 as he eclipsed 500 yards and found the end zone a good amount. There is some hope in Wilson, but the fan base would have a much better outlook on the roster had Pittsburgh been able to find a more formidable wide receiver two (WR2).
Another important note from Kaboly was that the Steelers were interested in bringing in Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who was recently released by the Seattle Seahawks. He wound up signing with the San Francisco 49ers to join their practice squad. He likely has a better chance of seeing the field with the 49ers due to the injuries that have occurred in Northern California.
There are still a good amount of options at wide receiver based on who has been released around the league, and Davis is still available as a veteran free agent. There might be other trade pieces available as well. However, Pittsburgh looks to be content with what they have, which is how it will begin the season.

Steelers Brought Veteran Back On The Practice Squad
Pittsburgh did sign Robert Woods during the 2025 offseason, but he had a quiet training camp and preseason which ultimately led to his release. He was brought back on the Practice Squad, and he is an option on a week-to-week basis to be elevated to the active roster. There is also the chance he could sign with another team, as players on the Practice Squad are free to sign elsewhere as long as they are signing to an active roster. It has already been said that he has interest around the league, but he is waiting for the right opportunity.
