The Pittsburgh Steelers are just over two weeks away from the season opener against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Many fans are hoping that the roster goes through some more upgrades before the ball gets kicked off on that Sunday, as the initial roster that was announced on Tuesday certainly has some weak spots. Depth is an issue in some regards, while positions like wide receiver lack depth and reliable talent at the top of the lineup behind DK Metcalf. This has been a problem at wide receiver for the last two years in Pittsburgh, but there doesn't seem to be a solution in sight.

Wide receiver is definitely the position much of the fan base wants to see upgraded the most heading into the 2025 NFL season, and the organization is running out of time to do so. There are still some veteran options available, including wide receiver Gabe Davis who has already been to Pittsburgh on two visits. However, the fact that he left both occasions without a contract is not necessarily a good sign. Trying to trade for a receiver is also an option, but it would be more difficult. Jakobi Meyers of the Las Vegas Raiders requested a trade recently, but the organization does not seem to want to move him. Insider Mark Kaboly cited this when stating there is no way the Steelers could land the veteran via trade.
The Raiders have zero interest in trading Jakobi Meyers, I've been told, so I am not sure how Steelers fans expect the Steelers to land him. Can't get what's not there.

Meyers is coming off of the best season of his career in 2024, and he is entering the final year of his current deal in 2025. He wants a new contract extension and for it to reflect what he has been able to do over the last few seasons with the Raiders. The two sides have not been able to agree on a contract, but Las Vegas reportedly does not want to deal him as he is a major part of the offense.

Meyers is the exact wide receiver that the Steelers would need to improve their room. Metcalf would still be the top wideout in Pittsburgh, but Meyers would be a reliable second option that has skills that are different enough from Metcalf's. The veteran is a crisp route runner with reliable hands, and he can make a lot of things happen on short and intermediate routes. This is something the offense in Pittsburgh has been missing over the last several seasons, and an addition like this would help the offense take a significant step forward.
Meyers is coming off of his first 1,000-yard season in 2024, and he has recorded at least 800 yards in four consecutive seasons while catching passes from some below-average quarterbacks.
Steelers May Be Out Of The Wide Receiver Business
Outside of Meyers, many would argue that the wide receivers who could potentially be available for Pittsburgh to add are not all that exciting. There are some interesting names that were released as rosters around the league were cut down this week, but players like that don't necessarily move the needle. Pittsburgh is reportedly content with the wide receiver room as it is currently constructed, with Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson being directly behind Metcalf.

That is a bit concerning considering the fact that Austin has missed most of training camp with an injury, and Wilson is preparing for his first taste of legitimate NFL action after only seeing 5 total snaps in 2024. The organization likes both players, but many within the fan base would like to see the wide receiver room shake out in a different way before the 2025 regular season begins.
