The Pittsburgh Steelers have waited quite a while to play in a meaningful football game. A Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens ended the team's 2024 campaign, but time has flown by throughout the course of a busy offseason. The organization is set to play the New York Jets on the road in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season. Hopes are high as Head Coach Mike Tomlin will look for his group to play as close to mistake-free football as possible. He prides himself in winning the turnover battle, controlling the time of possession, and playing clean.

It is important for successful NFL teams to control only what they can control in-game, and one consistent theme that comes up throughout any given season is officiating. Human error is a real thing at the professional level, even if the men and women in stripes are the best in the business. Luckily for the Steelers, it appears as if they got a good break in Week 1 with the Jets on the horizon.

Bill Vinovich and his crew will be traveling to New York to call the game. Vinovich is a veteran official that has been the lead man for three different Super Bowls, a feat that not many individuals have had the opportunity to do. He is recognized as one of the best referees in the league, so Pittsburgh will go on the road, but should not have to worry about too many inconsistencies.

On top of this, Vinovich and co. had an interesting trend in 2024. Home teams won 54.74% of the time a season ago (on average), but when Vinovich and his crew were on the call, that percentage plummeted to just 41.18%. Additionally, penalties were called on home teams slightly more than the franchise traveling in. All of those signs point to a slight advantage to Pittsburgh.

Another key penalty that could affect how the Steelers perform is offensive holding. The team is going to try and get the rushing attack going, so being called for questionable holding penalties would be far from ideal. In 2024, Vinovich and his group called the least amount in the league, only having 27 holding penalties accepted throughout the season.

One small hurdle for the Steelers to jump is their 1-4 record since December of 2019 when Vinovich is the lead official. The crew called the Steelers' and Ravens' second matchup of 2024, a game that was controlled by Baltimore. While that isn't necessarily a trend that will excite fans in the Steel City, it seems as if the team was given a good first assignment to start the 2025 campaign.

Referees have unfortunately made poor calls that end up affecting the outcome of games in the past. All 32 teams have had to deal with it, but it's a little more comforting to fans when a crew led by someone as experienced as Vinovich is in charge. Anything can happen, but certain trends combined with his lengthy track record and experience signal that the Steelers got a good break for Week 1.

Steelers Looking To Start 2025 Season Off With A Bang

There has been a lot of talk about Pittsburgh throughout the offseason, which is why there is so much excitement heading into a Week 1 contest against the Jets. The preferable outcome is a win that comes with little doubt. Fans will also look for Vinovich and his crew to have a clean, non-controversial first regular season start of the 2025 campaign. The last thing anyone wants is a bad call or two that changes the trajectory of the matchup.
