The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting ready to kick off their 2025 season on the road against the New York Jets. The Week 1 matchup is filled with exciting storylines and drama as Aaron Rodgers is now the Steelers' quarterback and Justin Fields is the Jets' quarterback. Both quarterbacks played for the other franchise in the 2024 season, and both teams moved on from them during the 2025 offseason.

Now they both get a unique shot for revenge right out of the gate, adding an extra layer of intensity to the opener. Fans will be eager to see how Rodgers handles leading the Steelers’ offense, which has struggled to find consistency in recent years. Fields did a solid job when given chances in the 2024 season with the Steelers. He led the team to a 4-2 record to start the season, but Pittsburgh still didn’t see a future with him beyond 2024 past a certain price point.

Offense has been a major concern for Pittsburgh, but Mike Tomlin told the media on Tuesday that he’s hopeful for a lot of points this season. The team has been working to improve its scoring and efficiency, and Week 1 presents the perfect opportunity to see if those changes are paying off. With Rodgers under center, the Steelers are banking on experience and smart decision-making to overcome the offensive struggles that have plagued them in previous seasons.

"You know, I would like to see a lot of points and a W," Tomlin told the Steelers media on Tuesday. "Sincerely, but what produces that? We have to minimize negative play, minimize self-inflicted wounds and those things that get you off schedule."

Tomlin’s teams haven’t been known for exciting offenses in recent years, but he’s clearly feeling very confident in what his team has with Rodgers under center.

He’s expecting a lot of points on Sunday against the Jets and laid out exactly what it’s going to take for the Steelers to secure a clean win to open the season.

"We have to win possession down football," Tomlin said. "I am sure I am looking for the same things that 31 other head coaches are looking for in Week 1 from their offensive units."

For the Jets, having Fields adds an intriguing twist, as he looks to make an immediate impact against his former team. The matchup between Rodgers and Fields carries extra intrigue, with both quarterbacks seeking redemption against the franchises that moved on from them. The Steelers will need to execute efficiently and take advantage of their opportunities if they want to start the season on the right note, making this one of the most anticipated opening-week games in the NFL.

Steelers Favored By 3 Points To Beat Jets In 2025 Season Opener

The Steelers open as three-point favorites to take down the Fields-led Jets in the Week 1 season opener. Getting off to a 1-0 start would energize the fan base and give Rodgers a major momentum boost, securing a win against the team that let him go after the 2024 season.

A loss, however, would raise serious questions, putting Pittsburgh’s decision to bring in Rodgers while letting Fields walk under heavy scrutiny. As always, the box score and final result will go a long way in determining just how this offseason move will be judged. Former Steelers defensive back Ryan Clark even believes a loss could actually help Pittsburgh. While no one wants a Week 1 loss, it's still important to stay calm no matter the result this early in the season.
