The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense was expected to come out and be a box office in Week 1 against the New York Jets and Justin Fields. Many assumed TJ Watt, Cam Heyward, and the rest of the Steelers’ high-paid defenders would make life extremely difficult for Fields and the Jets’ offense. Early on, however, it was clear that those expectations were far from reality. The Jets consistently moved the ball, exploiting gaps and using Fields’ mobility to extend plays. The Steelers’ defense struggled to adjust, giving up crucial first downs and big plays that left fans frustrated and concerned about the unit’s ability to perform at a high level this season.

Steelers' Jalen Ramsey makes a bone crushing hit on Jets' Garrett Wilson to help win Week 1 against New York.
Despite the overall breakdown, the defense did make a critical play when it mattered most. Jalen Ramsey delivered a massive hit that ultimately helped secure the win for Pittsburgh. That moment showcased the talent and potential within the defense, but it also highlighted that the team’s success relied more on individual brilliance than a consistently well-executed game plan. Steelers fans were left with a mix of relief and apprehension, knowing the team had escaped a Week 1 scare but not without exposing significant weaknesses.
After the game, Steelers safety Juan Thornhill addressed the media and openly admitted that the team may not have been fully prepared for Fields’ unique skill set and mobility. Thornhill’s comments only fueled concerns that the coaching staff, led by Mike Tomlin, might need to rethink their defensive approach moving forward. While the unit showed flashes of its potential, the lack of preparation and communication during the game raised serious questions about whether Pittsburgh’s high-paid defense can consistently dominate opponents or if Week 1 will be a sign of struggles to come.
"We got a lot of things we got to work on already on the defensive side," Thornhill said while speaking to members of the Pittsburgh media after the 34-32 Week 1 win over the Jets. "I just feel like we might not have been prepared for a running quarterback because we've been seeing a guy like Aaron [Rodgers] all camp where he's not really using his legs to try to beat us."
Thornhill raises a valid point that the Steelers’ defense had been used to going up against Aaron Rodgers, who is 41 years old and often stationary in the pocket compared to the speed of NFL defenses. Still, this reasoning holds little weight, as Tomlin is very familiar with Fields’ mobility.

Jets' Justin Fields runs for his second touchdown while playing the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2025 season.
There should have been few surprises, and hopefully during preparation the Steelers used mobile players as scout-team quarterbacks to simulate Fields. Still, Thornhill remains confident that this defense will clean things up and perform at the level fans expect.
"Then the first game of the year, you come out here against a guy that can run a 4.4 [40-yard dash], it just adds a little bit more to the game," Thornhill said. "Next time, I just feel like we'll be prepared for that. I'm not really panicked at all. I don't think no one on the defensive side is panicking, not one bit."
Steelers' Defense May Take Some Time To Peak
This defense features many new pieces, particularly in the secondary, which could explain some of the early season struggles. It may simply be a matter of time for this veteran unit to fully gel and develop chemistry.

Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin roams the practice field as his team works out during a 2025 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.
As players adjust to new roles, schemes, and teammates, the hope is that communication improves, mistakes are minimized, and the overall cohesion allows the Steelers’ defense to reach the level of dominance fans expect. Patience and consistent preparation will be key to unlocking the full potential of this retooled unit. As Thornhill stated, no one internally is worried about this defense.
