The Pittsburgh Steelers were very excited when they were able to select defensive lineman Derrick Harmon in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Harmon entered Pittsburgh with a lot of hype after an impressive college career, and he wasted no time showing why he was so highly regarded. From his explosive first steps in training camp to his dominant preseason performances, Harmon quickly became a player fans and analysts were eager to watch. Many Steelers insiders were thrilled with his technique, motor, and ability to disrupt offenses, projecting him as a cornerstone of the defensive line for years to come.

Unfortunately for the Steelers, Harmon suffered an injury during the preseason that has kept him off the field for the first two games of the 2025 season. The setback was a major disappointment for both the team and its fans, who were anticipating seeing him make an immediate impact. Despite the early-season absence, the team has remained optimistic about his recovery, and Harmon has been actively working to get back to full strength. His presence is expected to bolster the defensive front and provide a much-needed boost in key matchups later in the season.

On Wednesday, Harmon offered Steelers fans an update on his status, giving hope that his return may be imminent. Reporter Ray Fittipaldo shared on social media that Harmon claims he’s ready to go whenever the team needs him. While no official timetable has been announced, the update has energized Steeler Nation, who have been eagerly awaiting the chance to see their rookie standout take the field. If Harmon returns to form quickly, he could make an immediate difference in the Steelers’ defense and help the team contend in the highly competitive AFC North.

"I’m ready to go when my number is called," Harmon said.

What’s interesting is that Head Coach Mike Tomlin told the media that Harmon is questionable. That suggests the Steelers aren’t in any hurry to rush him back. However, Harmon is reportedly getting very close to being a full go. If he’s saying he’s ready, then it’s really up to Tomlin and the Steelers’ brass to decide when to put the rookie on the field.

The Steelers’ defense has been dreadful through the first two weeks of the 2025 season, allowing nearly 800 yards of total offense in those games. This unit was seriously expected to be one of the best in the NFL, but so far, it’s legitimately one of the worst in the league. Hopefully, Harmon’s return can help stop the run and make a meaningful impact, but it’s a lot to ask of a rookie coming off an injury.

Steelers' Rookie Derrick Harmon Can Quickly Be A Hero In Pittsburgh

Still, Harmon has a clear path to becoming a fan favorite. If he returns and this defense starts to slow down the run and make more stops, Harmon could quickly be seen as a superhero in the eyes of Steelers fans. His talent and effort could not only bolster the defensive line but also restore hope for a unit that has struggled far beyond expectations.

The Steelers are desperate to get this defense right. Teryl Austin has far too much talent on that side of the football for the unit to be getting crushed the way it has. It’s been just two games, but concerns about the defense are already at an all-time high. Getting Harmon back could give the fan base a much-needed burst of optimism. When that happens remains to be seen, but it certainly sounds possible soon.
