The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a revolving door at the quarterback position ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season. In the past four years, the team has relied on Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, and now Aaron Rodgers, to guide the offense. Although Rodgers has given the Steelers tremendous quarterback play, he isn't the plan for the future at the position at 41 years old. With uncertainty, one big-name quarterback could be on the move following the 2025 season, and he might be the answer for the Steelers at quarterback.

The Arizona Cardinals have a big decision on the horizon, that revolving around their franchise quarterback, Kyler Murray. The Cardinals drafted Murray with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and he has shown some signs of being an elite quarterback during his seven-year career, but that certainly hasn't been the case in 2025.
Murray has dealt with his fair share of injuries throughout his career, and a foot ailment has impacted his 2025 campaign as he was recently placed on Injured Reserve (IR) as the Cardinals look to Jacoby Brissett to lead their offense for potentially the remainder of the season.
With Murray expected to miss a lot of time, the Cardinals now have a decision to make in regards to his future. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, a split might be coming between Murray and the Cardinals.
"The Cardinals must decide by this offseason whether to try to trade Murray, release him or pay another $19.5 million in guaranteed money that becomes due on the fifth day of the new league year in mid-March," Schefter said. "Arizona and Murray are expected to have extensive discussions to help determine whether to move forward together or go their own ways. Many sources believe the latter is the likely outcome, with one source saying this week that 'a separation is imminent.'"
Murray's contract is a big factor. Murray signed afive-year, $230.5 million extension in 2022 and although he'll only have one year remaining on that deal after the 2025 season, it might be hard for the Cardinals to find a trade partner. With that being the case, General Manager Monti Ossenfort may be inclined to simply release Murray during the 2026 offseason, giving teams like the Steelers an opportunity to sign Murray in free agency.

This would be a very similar situation to what the Steelers were in during the 2024 offseason when they signed Wilson to a league-minimum deal after he was released by the Denver Broncos. Although that signing didn't work out for the Steelers, Murray offers much more upside as a former Heisman Trophy winner.
Steelers' Best Option At Quarterback In Future Might Be Murray
Murray is only 28 years old, and he has been one of the most electric quarterbacks in the league over the span of his career. He has had plenty of ups and downs, but given what quarterback options could be available in the 2026 offseason, Murray might be the best choice for Pittsburgh.
Possibly the biggest question mark in regards to Murray would be his durability, and the Steelers have dealt with enough quarterback uncertainty to know how important availability is. There have also been questions about his leadership, film study habits, and how committed he is at times. However, a change of environment can go a long way. Pittsburgh is known for its strong culture and stability. If there is any place that could help Murray reset his career and quiet the noise, it might be Pittsburgh.

The Steelers of course could look to draft a quarterback in 2026, but drafting and developing a quarterback is a gamble. Murray at least gives them someone who has already proven he can play at a high level when healthy.
