Steelers' Captain Publicly Questions If Players Can Trust Their Own Teammates In Shocking Statement

The Pittsburgh Steelers have put forth some embarrassing performances during the 2025 season, and the fan base got to see another one of those on Sunday night as the team lost to the Los Angeles Chargers. The game was close throughout the first half, but Pittsburgh just could not figure things out on the offensive side of the ball as the group struggled throughout the night. The offense for the Steelers had just three points for the majority of the game until Aaron Rodgers connected with Roman Wilson on a garbage time touchdown, but the game was far out of reach by that point.

The final score of the game was 25-10, but that score doesn't really tell the full story. The Steelers got manhandled throughout most of the game, and it was a completely embarrassing performance to put forth 10 weeks into the season. Things seem bleak in Pittsburgh, especially with a tough game against the Cincinnati Bengals coming up in Week 11.

Defensive captain Cam Heyward appeared on WPXI following the loss to the Chargers, and he seemed to have some questions for his teammates after the horrific showing.

"I'm not looking for an excuse," Heyward said. "I'm looking to just play better. We talk about it, but do we really know what we're doing, play in and play out? Do we trust the guy next to us? Defense, offense, do we trust each other to be in the right spots to make plays? Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes."

Things do not seem to be very optimistic for the team at the moment, as Heyward seems to be questioning everything that is going on. That says a lot considering he is the longest-tenured player on the team and one of the main leaders on the roster. It would be different if it was a young guy making a comment like this, but Heyward saying it should sound the alarm for the fan base.

The defense was not the issue for Pittsburgh during its loss to Los Angeles as the offense struggled mightily. That is something new, as the defense has been the main culprit for a few of Pittsburgh's losses in 2025 thus far, but this time the blame will certainly fall on the offense. The Steelers turned the ball over twice and once on special teams, yet the defense only allowed 23 points (if you don't include the safety from Rodgers). The group continued to force the Chargers to take field goals, which could have been a winning recipe had the offense for the Steelers been the slightest bit competent.

Heyward has spoken about players on defense being out of position before during the 2025 season, and he usually references gap control and things of that nature. This time around, he also mentioned the offensive side of the ball, which is not a good sign for the rest of the season in Pittsburgh.

Steelers' Defensive Front Has Played Much Better In Recent Weeks

Heyward was clearly not thrilled with the performance from his team or the outcome of the game, but his group played relatively well. The defense did a decent job shutting down drives from Los Angeles, and Heyward and the rest of the defensive front didn't allow the Chargers to get too comfortable. Los Angeles ran for 115 yards on 31 attempts, which isn't horrible for the defense. The group also consistently got pressure on quarterback Justin Herbert as he was sacked five times, but he also made some great plays to help his team win the game.

The defense has improved ever since the group was getting publicly ridiculed on every talk show in the nation, and hopefully that can continue moving forward. That side of the ball is now going to have to pick up the offense, which is what was always expected coming into the 2025 season.
