The Pittsburgh Steelers put their fans through the ringer during the 2025 offseason when it came to the quarterback position. It was clear the organization did not want to bring Russell Wilson back into the mix, but the franchise was interested in retaining Justin Fields. Fields ultimately decided to sign a very lucrative deal with the New York Jets that the Steelers did not want to meet, and the franchise then waited for months to sign a deal with four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers. The fan base seemed to be split on the pursuit of Rodgers, but the quarterback finally signed right before mandatory minicamp in June.

It was clear at a certain point in the 2025 offseason that Rodgers was going to be Pittsburgh's best option at quarterback, but many fans wanted the franchise to avoid the veteran as it seemed like he was stringing the organization along while he was making a decision. The quarterback was pondering whether or not to continue his playing career, and a lot of the fans in Pittsburgh were fed up with how long it was taking. Rodgers was transparent with the franchise the entire time, and it was clear the organization was okay with everything that was going on.
The entire saga of pursuing Rodgers was a little bit frustrating for many fans, but team insider Mike DeFabo thinks it might not be over with. The quarterback has not announced his future plans yet, which means the 2026 offseason could be another one full of indecisiveness and speculation.
"Is it too soon to start wondering what the future holds for Rodgers?" DeFabo asked. "Shortly after the veteran QB signed, he said on The Pat McAfee Show that he was 'pretty sure' this year would be his last. Maybe this will in fact be the future Hall of Famerβs last act, but considering the college QB class hasnβt been as strong as anticipated and Rodgers has generally played well, we could be in for another offseason of speculation and indecision."
DeFabo had this to say when asked who the most prominent player in Pittsburgh was that wouldn't be on the roster in 2026, and Rodgers is a reasonable answer to that question. When the quarterback initially signed with the Steelers, it seemed like he was near-ready to retire, but he hasn't mentioned that possibility in quite some time.

Rodgers seems to be having fun in Pittsburgh and he genuinely likes the teammates he has around him, as well as playing for Head Coach Mike Tomlin. He is also playing some great football as he has looked like one of the better quarterbacks in the AFC throughout the season.
His decision on his future may also depend on how the rest of the 2025 season goes. The Steelers should be able to clinch a spot in the playoffs, and if the team can go on a significant run, it might leave Rodgers feeling as if he has unfinished business in Pittsburgh, which might make him want to return for the 2026 season. However, retirement is a real possibility.

Steelers Could Also Lose Aaron Rodgers
Rodgers only signed a one-year deal with the Steelers, so he is technically a free agent during the 2026 offseason. He can sign elsewhere if wants to continue his career somewhere that is not Pittsburgh. The Minnesota Vikings could be an option as he was seemingly interested in playing for them during the 2025 offseason, but the Vikings opted to go with their younger quarterback. However, the quarterback play has not been good in Minnesota, which could result in both sides being interested in a deal a second time around.
