The Pittsburgh Steelers' playoff drought continued after they lost 30-6 to the Houston Texans on Monday night. It was the Wild Card Round of the playoffs and a home postseason game for the Steelers and their head coach, Mike Tomlin, which only made the loss more painful for fans. Pittsburgh went into halftime down just one point, giving the impression that the game was still within reach. That hope quickly disappeared in the second half, as the Steelers failed to score a single point while the Texans added 23 unanswered to turn a competitive game into a certified blowout.

It was as ugly of a loss as you could imagine, defined by offensive struggles, poor execution, and a lack of adjustments after halftime. For Tomlin, this type of postseason collapse has become familiar. Many of his playoff losses during the drought have followed the same script, with the team failing to rise to the moment. The drought itself dates back to the Steelers’ last playoff win in the 2016 season, and each year since has ended with frustration and disappointment.

The @steelers are about to lose their 7th straight playoff game..longest active playoff losing streak in the NFL. They’re about to lose their 3rd straight home playoff game.. a first in franchise history. Their offense was outscored by the…
Now the focus shifts to Tomlin’s future. Questions remain about what he will be doing in the 2026 season, as some believe he may have opportunities to move into television as an analyst or personality, while others think he could coach for another team.
The Steelers are unlikely to fire him, even though many fans would like to see the organization move in a different direction. After the loss, Tomlin spoke with the media but deflected questions about his uncertain future, leaving the situation unresolved for now.
"I am not even in that mindset as I sit here tonight," Tomlin said. "I am more in the mindset of what transpired in this stadium and you know certainly what we did or did not do. I am not a big picture mentality as I sit here tonight."
Looking ahead, the Steelers find themselves at a crossroads that feels all too familiar. The organization continues to preach stability and patience, but patience is wearing thin among a fan base that expects championships, not just winning seasons and first-round exits.

The standard in Pittsburgh has always been Super Bowls, and anything short of that is viewed as falling short. Right now, it is hard to argue that the team is moving closer to that goal, especially when the same issues seem to resurface every January.
Steelers Need To Make Major Changes Before The 2026 Season
Roster questions will also play a major role in what comes next. The quarterback situation remains uncertain as it does seem like Aaron Rodgers will retire, the offense lacks consistency, and the team must decide how to better support a defense that has carried them for stretches of the season. These are not problems that can be solved with small tweaks. They require real evaluation and, potentially, major changes in approach.

For Tomlin, the pressure will only continue to grow. Fair or not, head coaches are judged by postseason success, and that is where his résumé has taken the biggest hit over the past decade. Until the Steelers prove they can win meaningful games again, the noise around the head coach and the direction of the franchise will not go away. However, it does not sound like the Steelers want to fire Tomlin.
