The Pittsburgh Steelers made a somewhat unpopular decision to hire Mike McCarthy to be their next head coach. This is a major moment in football history, as it marks only the fourth head-coaching hire for Pittsburgh since 1969. The Steelers have a longstanding reputation for stability, and now with a 62-year-old coach entering his first season in the Steel City for 2026, many are curious about what McCarthy’s plans will be.

The Steelers' roster is not exactly Super Bowl-contending, but it still has some exciting pieces that could be developed under McCarthy. Analysts and fans are interested to see how he will manage the mix of veteran leadership and young talent on the team. Pittsburgh has the foundation to be competitive while also preparing for the future, even if immediate championship expectations remain tempered.
Much of the discussion surrounding McCarthy’s hiring centers on his potential role in developing or identifying the next franchise quarterback. Many observers see his experience and track record as a valuable asset for the team’s young players, especially second-year quarterback Will Howard. McCarthy’s first season will be closely watched as the Steelers try to balance growth, development, and competitiveness in the league. McCarthy spoke with the Steelers media on Tuesday as he was introduced in his press conference. He shed some light about his true thoughts on working with Howard.
"I'm really excited about Will Howard," McCarthy said while speaking with the Pittsburgh media. "I think he is someone who really came on there at Ohio State. You know, I am anxious to work with him. It would be great to have Aaron [Rodgers] back, but Will [Howard] and Mason [Rudolph], I am really excited about working with those guys."
The Steelers felt the same way as McCarthy when they elected to draft Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Many pundits were a little shocked he fell that late, considering he led the Ohio State Buckeyes on a National Championship run. What he did in lifting a talented team at the highest level in the biggest moments was impressive and telling.

The Steelers took a small risk on him in that sixth round. Many feel that if Howard develops into a reliable backup quarterback, it will already be a big win for Pittsburgh. Others see legitimate potential for him to become an above-average starter in the league. There is also a small portion of Steelers fans who truly expect Howard to shock the football world and become a star franchise quarterback.
While that last outcome may be more of a pipe dream, McCarthy’s track record of developing and working successfully with quarterbacks is encouraging. His experience could be exactly what Howard needs to reach his potential and give the Steelers a promising future at the most important position in football.
Steelers' 2026 QB Situation Is Going To Be Very Interesting To Monitor
The Steelers’ 2026 quarterback situation is going to be very interesting to monitor. McCarthy was first asked directly about Aaron Rodgers and the possibility of his return to Pittsburgh for the 2026 season. He made it clear that he has spoken with Rodgers and would welcome him back, emphasizing the value of having an experienced leader in the quarterback room.

At the same time, McCarthy highlighted Mason Rudolph, noting that he is eager to get into the QB room and start working. Between Howard’s potential, Rudolph’s experience, and Rodgers’ leadership, the Steelers have multiple options to shape their quarterback future. Though, none truly excite Steeler Nation. There's a lot of different ways that the Steelers can go at the QB spot.
