Pittsburgh Steelers fans need to prepare for a ton of change within the organization. That change began immediately after the 2025 season came to a close as former Head Coach Mike Tomlin stepped down from the role after 19 seasons. A coaching change meant an entirely new coaching staff under Mike McCarthy. His new coaching staff is mostly hired, but some more additions could be made. New coaches also means new players, and the roster could go through some serious turnover during the 2026 offseason, especially with some players making key decisions about their futures.

A pair of players who will be making a decision on their future is defensive tackle Cam Heyward and quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is a pending free agent who is considering retirement, while Heyward is still under contract in Pittsburgh but he could also retire. Heyward has made some media appearances at the events surrounding Super Bowl LX, but he has done a good job staying out of the headlines when it comes to be asked questions about his retirement. That was true, until he made a cryptic post on X on Sunday morning.

Heyward posted a gif of a book on fire and closing, which could be taken a few different ways. The most obvious way is that he is closing the book on his career, which would hint at a retirement announcement coming soon. It is also important to note that he is joining NBC's pregame coverage for Super Bowl LX, and this could all be a ploy to drum up some more viewers for his appearance. He could also be well aware of what he is doing and just be trolling fans by posting something about closing the book on the 2025 NFL season.

Heyward's post is certainly bizarre, and he is also testing the TV market by joining NBC for Super Bowl Sunday. He already has a successful podcast which would help the transition into retirement, and networks appear to be somewhat interested in working with him.
Fans in Pittsburgh should know what Heyward plans to do in 2026 in the near future. He won't keep the franchise hanging as his retirement could effect the organization's strategy going into the draft or free agency. Pittsburgh already started to inject some youth into the defensive line by selecting Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black in 2025, and Keeanu Benton has been a nice addition seen being drafted back in 2023.
Heyward is still playing at an extremely high level, and him ending his playing career would effect the Steelers no matter what. He is coming off of arguably the best stretch of his career as he was named an All-Pro in each of the last two seasons. He has shown repeatedly that he is still one of the best interior defensive lineman in the league, and it will probably be hard to walk away from the game while he is still playing at such a high level.

Steelers Need Cam Heyward Back For Another Season
Pittsburgh would benefit greatly from Heyward coming back for another season. It would be another year that the younger guys on the defensive line get to learn from one of the greats, and it would also allow the franchise to focus on building up the offense during the offseason. If Heyward were to retire the franchise would have to target defensive tackle a good bit during the draft and free agency. Pittsburgh needs to focus on the offensive side of the ball, and Heyward sticking around would allow the team to do that.
