The Pittsburgh Steelers are focused on the offseason, trying to sort through the heavy change that has impacted the organization. Ever since the hiring of new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, the Steelers have had to organize his new staff, and now this new staff is getting ready for the start of free agency in March. With how different the staff has become, and how different their approaches to certain situations will be regarding players currently on the roster, there will potentially be some major news the Steelers end up breaking that will get everyone in the media going. Inevitably, McCarthy will end up having to answer for it.

The potential of major change has led many to wonder whether or not McCarthy will be readily available to the media to discuss said major changes. Earlier on Friday afternoon, insider Mark Kaboly made a guest appearance on 93.7 The Fan to discuss everything from who the Steelers could draft, to free agent news. Within this segment, Kaboly was also asked a question about how McCarthy's media availability will differ from former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin would usually speak on Tuesdays to hold a press conference, and Kaboly's comment on McCarthy's potential plans indicate a differing schedule, hinting at the possibility that McCarthy might speak to the media more than Tomlin ever did or would.

"Oh yeah. Tomlin was always available, but we just never pursued that because we knew it was a waste of time and it was gonna cut into the locker room time 'cause Tomlin wasn't going to say a darn thing," Kaboly explained. "Making you wait 25 minutes till the locker room's almost closed."

Kaboly's comments about Tomlin's habits and availability is part of the answer on how the potential exists for McCarthy to potentially hold more than one press conference a week, compared to how Tomlin only held one a week and hardly spoke outside of that one day. A more open schedule for the head coach would lead to more answers being given about the team's plans for the future, or how they would try to justify signing or drafting one player over another that might get more media attention.

It will be interesting to see how McCarthy will eventually handle his media availability, and with Kaboly's comments hinting that he would potentially be more open to the media, the Steelers' front office could be more transparent with the fans as well. There are plenty of questions the franchise will still need to answer, and a more open head coach would be a great way for the team to answer said questions. Just like how the fans were very vocal towards Tomlin toward the end of his time with the Steelers, the fans will likely be just as vocal with McCarthy, and if he talks more to the media, those fans will get their words in on a more common basis.

McCarthy has a very good opportunity to make an even bigger name for himself as a head coach with the Steelers. His previous coaching expertise is something that has been praised by many in football circles and the media, and if he could get the most out of the team's offense and turn them into contenders, fans will have a lot of great things to say to McCarthy, should he be more openly available to the media. With how McCarthy has been able to revolutionize offenses, he could end up having a lot of great things to say.

Steelers Need To Focus On Rebuilding Offense Under Mike McCarthy

McCarthy has been able to establish dominant offenses on the teams he has coached across the league. This kind of revolutionized offense is exactly the thing the Steelers need, and if he's successful at making it work, then he'll end up having a lot of people praise him, especially if he's more open with the media.
