Massive Change From Steelers' Mike McCarthy Finally Revealed

It is a new day in the Steel City for the Pittsburgh Steelers. With Mike Tomlin no longer in charge, Mike McCarthy steps in as head coach for the 2026 season. The transition marks the end of an era and the beginning of one filled with uncertainty. McCarthy does not inherit a clean slate. Tomlin leaves behind a roster with talent, but also clear questions. Now, the challenge is determining how to reshape and elevate the group into being a true contender.

Steelers fans are cautiously optimistic. There is belief in the organization’s stability, yet there is also hesitation about what comes next. Change at the head-coaching position in Pittsburgh is rare, which only heightens the spotlight on McCarthy as he settles into his new role. During the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, fans heard from several prospects about the possibility of playing in Pittsburgh.

They also heard insight from Nate Tice of Yahoo Sports and NFL Network, who spoke on Steelers Nation Radio via the Steelers Audio Network. Tice offered perspective on what McCarthy brings to the table and why the hire may deserve more confidence than it initially received. One comment in particular stood out as Tice defended McCarthy’s reputation as a play-caller, arguing that he does not receive enough credit for his offensive design and in game adjustments.

"McCarthy has actually gotten, I don't want to say underrated, but he's actually a better play-caller and a play-designer than maybe he gets credit for, he's good," Tice said. "It's as traditional West Coast as it gets. You're going to see a lot of quick passing game. If it's (Aaron) Rodgers (at quarterback), he's going to have more freedom to do 'smoke' routes (quick reads and decisions) to (wide receiver DK) Metcalf, where he's signaling stuff (at the line of scrimmage). (McCarthy is) going to give (Rodgers) that freedom. It's going to be a lot more 'gun' (shotgun formation) heavy. It's going to be a lot more plays (called) at the line."

No one truly knows whether Aaron Rodgers will be back with the Steelers for the 2026 season. He signed a one-year deal ahead of the 2025 campaign, and when Tomlin stepped down, many assumed that meant the end of Rodgers’ time in Pittsburgh. Instead, the organization pivoted in a direction that has fueled fresh speculation.

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers hugs his old Head Coach Mike McCarthy after their team won a big professional football contest.

The Steelers hired McCarthy, Rodgers’ former head coach in Green Bay, and added several assistants with ties to his past. That move immediately raised eyebrows. Bringing back familiar voices suggests the possibility that Rodgers could be preparing for one more run, this time reunited with a coach who understands how he operates at the line of scrimmage.

If that reunion happens, Tice believes Steelers fans may notice a significant change. Speaking about McCarthy’s offensive approach, Tice pointed to the freedom Rodgers has traditionally been given within that system. Under Tomlin, the structure was different. There were stretches where Rodgers appeared to operate within tighter parameters.

With McCarthy, that dynamic could shift. Historically, Rodgers has thrived when empowered to adjust protections, change plays, and control tempo based on what he sees from the defense. That autonomy allows him to fully leverage his football IQ and experience.

Steelers' Entire Offense Could Change

That potential philosophical change is massive. It would not just impact Rodgers, but the entire offense. More freedom at the line could mean more aggressive play-calling, more back shoulder opportunities, and a system tailored around the quarterback’s instincts.

For now, Rodgers’ future remains uncertain; but if he does return, the structure around him may look very different. Tice’s stance suggests that much of the criticism may overlook the structure and consistency McCarthy builds within an offense. As the Steelers enter this new chapter, the focus now shifts to whether McCarthy can silence doubts and maximize the roster in front of him.
