The Pittsburgh Steelers have already made major headlines on the first day of the legal tampering period of free agency. While many Steelers fans are closely watching their team’s moves and speculating about what’s next for the roster, eyes are also scanning the entire AFC North and the rest of the NFL. Every move by a division rival can shift the balance of power, and this year’s free agency period is no exception.

In terms of the Steelers’ AFC North rivals, the Baltimore Ravens appeared to strengthen their squad significantly when they traded for superstar defensive pass rusher Maxx Crosby. The addition of Crosby promised to make the Ravens a more fearsome defensive team and put pressure on the rest of the division. For Steelers fans, this initially seemed like a potential challenge, signaling that Baltimore was aggressively reshaping its roster for a title run. Now that John Harbaugh is no longer the head coach of the Ravens, Jesse Minter is aiming to make a strong start in the AFC North.
However, the early returns of free agency have not been kind to the Ravens. They have already lost three of their top free agents. Starting center Tyler Linderbaum signed a three-year, $81 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. Tight end Isaiah Likely joined the New York Giants on a three-year, $40 million contract, and outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones departed for the New England Patriots. These departures make Baltimore one of the biggest losers of the legal tampering period so far, giving Steelers fans plenty of reasons to feel optimistic as the offseason just gets underway.

1-C Tyler Linderbaum (Raiders)
2-TE Isaiah Likely (Giants)
3-OLB Dre’Mont Jones (Patriots)
4-FB Patrick Ricard
5-TE Charlie Kolar
6-P Jordan Stout (Giants)
7-CB Chidobe Awuzie
8-S Alohi Gilman
9-OLB Kyle Van Noy
10-S Ar’Darius Washington
The Ravens still have seven more top-10 free agents they can try to retain, giving them some flexibility to stabilize the roster after a rough start to the legal tampering period. The good news for Baltimore and technically the bad news for Steelers fans and the rest of the AFC North is that the Ravens will likely receive significant compensatory draft picks for losing these players.

These picks could help them build for the future and replenish key areas of the team over the next few drafts. Comp picks, especially in the third and fourth rounds, are highly valuable in today’s NFL, offering the Ravens a chance to restock with young talent without giving up existing roster pieces.
However, while draft picks provide hope for the future, they are not an immediate fix. Replacing a talented tight end like Likely, a star center like Linderbaum, and a top-tier outside linebacker in Jones is a major challenge. These players were core contributors on both sides of the ball, and their departures leave immediate holes that cannot simply be filled with rookies.
The Ravens’ coaching staff and front office will have to be creative, either targeting free agents who can step in right away or finding diamonds in the draft to maintain competitiveness. For now, while the Ravens still have resources, the early free agency losses highlight how difficult it is to maintain a championship-caliber roster in the modern NFL.
Steelers Expecting To Make More Moves
There is a lot of noise surrounding the Steelers and their potential to make more moves. They have a significant amount of available cap space, and it seems likely that they will not keep all of their draft picks, creating a strong opportunity to continue wowing the fan base and improving the roster.

For now, Steelers fans are happy to see the Ravens lose key players, giving Pittsburgh a small early advantage in the AFC North. The combination of smart free agency moves and strategic draft decisions could position the Steelers to build on their strengths and challenge their rivals in the coming season.
