The Pittsburgh Steelers have been very active as the legal tampering period has gotten underway. The new league year officially begins on Wednesday, and Steelers General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike McCarthy still have a host of major decisions to make regarding free agency. Of course, there's the 2026 NFL Draft too, as the front office continues to build this roster for the upcoming season. One of the biggest rumors circulating right now involves inside linebacker Patrick Queen, who could possibly be traded.

Queen signed with the Steelers ahead of the 2024 season and has been a key contributor to the team’s defense. He is widely regarded as the quarterback of that unit, and while some fans argue he hasn’t fully lived up to the hype of his $41 million contract, many believe Queen has delivered exactly what Pittsburgh hoped for when they signed him. His leadership and consistency have made him an integral part of the team’s defensive identity.
NFL insider Adam Schefter addressed the Queen trade speculation on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, offering Steelers fans more insight into what is really happening between Queen and Khan. Schefter’s comments suggest that while trade talks are circulating, there is more nuance to the situation than simple rumors indicate, and fans should pay close attention as the team navigates the start of the new league year.
"The Patrick Queen one is unusual because that also continues to float around out there," Schefter said while speaking about the Steelers' situation with Queen. "The Pittsburgh Steelers said they are not interested in moving on from him. This could just be a money issue where he could be looking for more. Maybe they would like Queen to take a pay cut that he is not willing to take right now. That one, we can pay attention to, but it doesn't seem like it's pressing at this point."
While Queen’s situation is generating headlines, it is just one piece of a much larger puzzle for the Steelers as they enter the new league year. Khan and McCarthy have several other key decisions looming, from evaluating veteran contracts to identifying positions that need reinforcement through free agency. The front office has already shown a willingness to be aggressive in building this roster, and fans can expect more moves that could reshape the team’s depth chart before the draft even begins.

Free agency will test the Steelers’ ability to balance talent with salary cap constraints. Beyond Queen, there are other players whose contracts and performance could be scrutinized, leaving Khan with tough calls on who stays and who could be moved to create flexibility.
Draft strategy will also play a role, as the team looks to pair young talent with established leaders like Queen to form a competitive roster capable of contending in the AFC. McCarthy has emphasized the importance of continuity and culture, so any decisions made will likely reflect both financial prudence and the desire to maintain the identity of the team.
Steelers Are Not Currently In An Urgent Situation With Patrick Queen
For now, Steelers fans can breathe a little easier knowing the team has publicly committed to Queen, even if contract talks remain an open discussion. As Schefter noted, this does not appear to be an urgent situation, and there is still time for the two sides to reach a resolution that works for both.

In the coming weeks, the combination of draft picks, free agent acquisitions, and contract negotiations will shape Pittsburgh’s roster, and Queen’s role will likely remain central to their defensive strategy. Ultimately, the Steelers are moving forward with a plan, and while some uncertainty remains, the foundation for the 2026 season is already taking shape.
