The Pittsburgh Steelers have made some great signings ever since free agency opened up in 2026. The franchise has addressed several needs, while also acquiring some necessary depth. Cornerback Jamel Dean and running back Rico Dowdle highlight Pittsburgh's free agency class this year, while wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. was another huge addition via trade. A less-talked-about signing was defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day, who could end up being a key part of the defensive rotation upfront. He is an experienced veteran who has been a part of winning cultures around the league, and he could end up being a great signing for the Steelers.

Joseph-Day last played with the Tennessee Titans during the 2024 and 2025 NFL seasons, and he has also spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers. The veteran signed a two-year deal with the Steelers worth roughly $11 million. He provides needed depth and experience for the defensive line, and he spoke to the media on Monday during his introductory press conference. He was asked about how he views himself as a leader, both on and off the field. He had been a captain during his time with the Chargers, and he was a mentor for younger players with the Titans.

"I think it's just about being authentic, being yourself, right," Joseph-Day said. "Not pushing it upon anyone, just going to work every day, and letting it naturally happen. Letting people just naturally gravitate towards you. I just believe in not being seen, but being heard. That's kind of like my deal. That's kind of my deal when I play, I just try not to be seen. If I'm not being seen, then I'm doing a good job. But I'm heard, you know? Like, 'Sebastian Joseph-Day on the stop.' Something like that. That's the way I try to kind of live. Just do what I have to do on the football field."

Joseph-Day's answer seemed like a long-winded way of saying he prefers to lead by example. The questions about his willingness to be a mentor and leader stemmed from the fact that the organization has invested in young defensive linemen over the last few years, and Joseph-Day seems willing to help them in any way he can. He will show them the ropes while trying to set the tone on the field.

Derrick Harmon, Keeanu Benton, and Yahya Black are some of the younger guys on the defensive line that Joseph-Day could help push in the right direction. If that group can get better collectively, the Steelers' entire defense should improve. Stopping the run will help the defense control the game while putting the opposing offense in obvious passing situations, which can allow the pass rush to tee off.

Joseph-Day is a great signing for Pittsburgh, and he will be a great mentor and leader over the next two seasons. He can also still produce on the field, which makes this a great bargain deal for the franchise.

Steelers Are Bringing In Run-Stopping Reinforcements

Joseph-Day is not going to wow anyone with his sack numbers, but he can be identified as a run stopper. He has recorded 85 combined tackles over the last two seasons in Tennessee while starting 22 games, and his big frame is able to clog up holes in the run game. He will probably come off of the bench for the Steelers as a rotational defensive lineman, which is a spot he could thrive in for the Steelers. Joseph-Day can still get to the quarterback, as he's recorded 4.5 sacks over the last two seasons. The Steelers should also be expected to bring in another defensive lineman through the 2026 NFL Draft.

What do you think of Joseph-Day's leadership style and approach to his game? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
