The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering a really uncertain time with Mike McCarthy as their head coach. This is uncharted territory for Pittsburgh, as McCarthy is only their fourth head coach since the 1969 season. McCarthy will be eager to come into the Steel City and start winning right away. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season, and he is determined to end that drought. Expectations are high, and the pressure to turn things around quickly is immense.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan has been trying to find the next face of the franchise at the quarterback position, widely regarded as the most important in football. Since Ben Roethlisberger retired in 2022, Pittsburgh has struggled to identify a long-term solution under center. The 2026 NFL Draft was supposed to be the moment where the Steelers would find their guy, but the quarterback class was far worse than expected. That leaves the team in a precarious spot, with fans desperate for clarity on the future of the position.
Now, Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo is sounding the alarm about potential issues with finding the franchise quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft. Early scouting reports are already calling the class "generational," but questions remain about who will truly emerge as a long-term solution for Pittsburgh. The pressure is on McCarthy, Khan, and the entire organization to make the right moves quickly, because the Steelersβ window to remain competitive in a league that is constantly evolving is not infinite. However, according to Fittipaldo, it's not going to be easy to just find the face of the franchise in the 2027 NFL Draft either.
"These prospects get pretty good intel on where they'll be taken when they decide to come out," Fittipaldo said. "So if they're projected as top 10 picks, I don't think there is enough NIL money to coax them to come back. It gets interesting after that. Let's say the '27 class is as advertised. Let's say five QBs are expected to get drafted in the top 10. In that scenario, what do prospects Nos. 6 and 7 do? That's where it can get tricky."
Between a new coach, a struggling quarterback situation, and mounting expectations from fans and ownership alike, the next 12 months will define the future of the franchise for years to come. The Steelers are at a crossroads, and every decision from here on out will be scrutinized. Finding the right quarterback in the 2027 draft could be the key to returning Pittsburgh to the playoff stage and restoring the glory that has long defined the Steel Curtain era.

With the 2027 class expected to be great, the Steelers may finally be in a position to take another swing and possibly find their franchise quarterback.
The quarterbacks expected to be highly regarded in the 2027 draft include Arch Manning from Texas, who is frequently projected as the early top pick. Other top prospects are Dante Moore from Oregon, DJ Lagway from Florida, and Dylan Raiola from Nebraska.
Steelers' Omar Khan Needs To Solve The QB Problem ASAP
Fittipaldo has articulated that there could be some issues because of NIL money, which might complicate matters for the Steelers. The truth is, it should not. Other solid organizations have taken swings and successfully found their guy. It has simply taken Khan and the Steelers too long, which is likely why McCarthy was hired, because he is known for developing quarterbacks.
