The Pittsburgh Steelers have their sights set on a Super Bowl as they have had yet another exciting free agency period. The team has added notable acquisitions, such as Michael Pittman Jr., Jamel Dean, and Rico Dowdle. General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike McCarthy are making a splash in their first offseason together. They have added arguably the best cornerback on the market in Dean, a great replacement for the team's 2025 MVP Kenneth Gainwell in Dowdle, and beefed-up other areas like safety, and defensive line. Sebastian Joseph-Day and Jaquan Brisker were also added recently. All of these moves have received high praise from the media, but one move in particular is seen as one of the best in the entire offseason.

Former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. (11) points towards a referee to make sure he is lined up properly during a professional football contest at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The move for Pittman was a long time coming for the Steelers. Not the player himself, but the move at wide receiver was essential. The team has been without a capable wide receiver two (WR2) for too long, and now that changes. The Steelers only gave up a sixth-round pick for Pittman's services, a nice move by Khan. This should help out whoever the Steelers' starting quarterback will be, whether it's Aaron Rodgers, Will Howard, or any other unexpected signal-caller. While it will help the quarterback, it may help fellow wide receiver DK Metcalf the most. Metcalf struggled in 2025 at times as he was double-teamed often. With Pittman alongside him now, he may be able to get back to his star form.
Gordan McGuiness of Pro Football Focus recently wrote an article about the best moves of the offseason so far. He lists the Steelers' trade for Pittman as one of the best, believing the team's value out of the trade is very good, while the Indianapolis Colts' value is average. He dives into the Colts needing to unload Pittman's contract, while also mentioning the Steelers' need for a high-end wide receiver.
"The Colts needed to make this move after signing Alec Pierce to such a hefty deal, and it profiles as a big upgrade for the Steelers' offense," said McGuiness. "Pittman has a safe pair of hands, dropping just 5.0% of the catchable targets he has seen throughout his NFL career, and is another big target for whoever the Steelers' quarterback is in 2026."
Pittman has been one of the more underrated wide receivers around the NFL the last few years, mostly due to his team's inconsistent quarterback lyPittman has 485 catches for 5,254 yards and 25 touchdowns, seven of which came last season.

Right now, Pittsburgh doesn't have a set starting quarterback, but the Steelers are a much better team and franchise than the Colts. Pittman will have a better opportunity to win with the Steelers in 2026. With the Colts, Pittman played in just one playoff game in his six years in Indy.
Steelers Aren't That Far From Being A Legit Contender
The team's offense is starting to really come together. They are building a solid receiving core, but could still use one or two more significant additions. They have a young offensive line on the rise, with studs in Zach Frazier and Troy Fautanu, and they have great running back and tight end rooms. They are seemingly just a quarterback away from being a serious contender on offense. The defense, however, is a different story. They have some aging vets with a mix of young upcomers.

The defense had plenty of problems in 2025, including poor schematics at times, underachieving veterans, and blown leads after halftime. The defense has young bright spots, such as Joey Porter Jr., Derrick Harmon, and Nick Herbig. With a new defensive coordinator in Patrick Graham, there's no telling what will happen in 2026. The defense for the first time in 19 years will no longer be in Mike Tomlin's hands. The Steelers will truly find out where their roster is with this new management.
