It’s no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers are in desperate need of clarity at the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers led the team during the 2025 season, guiding them to a 10–7 record and an AFC North title. However, it still wasn’t enough to end the franchise’s playoff win drought, which has lingered since the 2016 season. Now, all eyes are on Mike McCarthy as he looks to change that narrative in his first season in Pittsburgh.

Rumors are beginning to swirl that Rodgers could return for the 2026 season. When he initially committed to Pittsburgh in 2025, many believed it would be a one-year stint, and Rodgers himself suggested it would likely be his final ride. Now, he appears to be reconsidering. If he does come back, the Steelers’ quarterback room would likely consist of Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, and Will Howard. If Rodgers ultimately walks away, attention will quickly shift to General Manager Omar Khan and whether he explores the trade market for a new signal-caller.

One intriguing option is Mac Jones, currently a backup with the San Francisco 49ers. Jones stepped in during the 2025 season when Brock Purdy went down with an injury and showed flashes of starting-caliber ability. The idea gained traction during a debate on SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Airing It Out, where the possibility of Pittsburgh trading a second-round pick for Jones sparked serious discussion. Bill Lekas asked whether it would be smart to give up a second-round pick for a quarterback like Jones. Matt Simms didn’t hesitate with his response.

"Mac Jones, Steelers, second-round pick with Mike McCarthy. I would consider it," Simms said. "I don't say that it's like a, 'Oh, yep. Definitely taking it right now. Close it.' But I would definitely put that in high consideration. Yes. Because I do think Mac Jones really has proven again that he is an NFL-caliber starter in this league."

Many believe Jones has done enough to earn another shot as a starting quarterback in the NFL. He was selected 15th overall in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, with expectations that he could become the face of the franchise. That ultimately didn’t materialize, and Jones found himself bouncing between backup roles before getting a legitimate opportunity with the 49ers when Purdy went down with a toe injury.

Jones led the 49ers to a 5–3 record during that stretch as a starter, showing toughness and poise while flashing the traits of a capable starter. His performance left many wondering if his early struggles were more a product of system fit and coaching rather than a lack of talent. At first glance, the idea of the Steelers giving up a second-round pick for Jones may feel steep, but upon closer consideration, it’s not unreasonable for a team that is clearly searching for answers and should be willing to explore every possible option.

Steelers May Finally Have The Infrastructure To Make A QB Trade Make Sense

The Steelers may finally be in a position where taking a swing at a quarterback like Jones actually makes sense. With McCarthy now leading the way, there’s a proven track record of developing quarterbacks and getting the most out of their skill sets.

Combine that with an improved supporting cast and more stability on offense, and Pittsburgh has the infrastructure it has lacked in recent years. If the Steelers truly want to evaluate Jones, this environment gives them a real chance to do it properly. McCarthy has proven in the past that he can develop quarterbacks. Could Jones be his next success story?
