The Pittsburgh Steelers head into the 2026 NFL Draft with 12 total selections, including pick 21 in the first round. Pittsburgh is set up to be flexible with it, but there is a huge need at left guard. The Steelers have two veterans in line to compete for the spot, but a first-round pick may be possible to change things up a bit. There are many intriguing prospects at the position with whom the organization will have to decide between.

The Black and Gold had one of its highly-touted offensive lineman, Isaac Seumalo, depart in free agency. The left guard was a Pro Bowler with the Steelers, and his veteran presence improved the entire unit. Seumalo inked a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals when the 2026 new league year began. While this is a huge loss, the Steelers seem comfortable going with using an in-house talent or a draft pick at the position.
The NFL Draft has a plethora of really good guard talent that the Steelers could really like. The biggest name on that list is Olaivavega Ioane from Penn State. Pittsburgh has been mocked to draft him at 21 if he falls to there. This high of a talent falling to the Black and Gold reminded Steelers beat writer, Christopher Carter, of when the organization took David DeCastro in the first round in 2012. Carter spoke on this on an episode of the North Shore Drive podcast.
"Ola Ioane, the Penn State guard, if he falls to 21, he would be like the David DeCastro of this draft," Carter said. "When DeCastro fell to them, [the Steelers] were like, 'We can't pass this up. We have to take this guy,' and lo and behold, they took a multiple-time All-Pro offensive guard who was a big contributor to what made arguably the best offensive line for a few years in football."
The Steelers have the chance to experience some deja vu and do the exact same thing again in the 2026 NFL Draft. Ioane is a lineman that Pittsburgh should not be able to pass up.

Ioane is a staggering 6'4" and 320 pounds. The Steelers could add yet another top-round draft pick on their line, and if he's anything like DeCastro, it would be worth it. To compare the two, both have similar statures; DeCastro is a little taller at 6'5", but both weigh in around the same.
Both players were considered the best guards in their draft classes. If Ioane slips all the way to 21, it could be yet another steal for the Steelers. If Ioane has any chance of playing like DeCastro, it would be worth the valuable pick.
Steelers' Left Guard Options Remain Minimal
Pittsburgh still has versatile lineman Spencer Anderson and newly-signed guard/center Brock Hoffman as candidates for the job, too. While neither of these guys has started consistently in this league, they're both very capable. However, if the Steelers value Anderson as being an extra lineman and Hoffman as high-end depth, it could pave the way for a high draft pick to carve his way into the starting lineup.

If a draft pick like Ioane falls out of reach, then the Steelers could go with either veteran and most likely be fine. However, Anderson is in the last year of his rookie deal, and Hoffman signed just a one-year deal. A guard project could be in play with a mid-round draft pick, and the organization has plenty of those. The Steelers' brass have three third-round draft choices, and some offensive line help wouldn't hurt if Ioane goes before 21.
The franchise made a similar move when drafting now-starter Mason McCormick in the fourth round of the 2024 draft. No matter where the team goes, the chances of taking a guard are high. With no long-term answer at the left guard spot, there will more than likely be a interior offensive lineman selected by the front office.
