The Pittsburgh Steelers have done a rather respectable job of selecting good talent ever since Omar Khan was promoted to be the general manager. The 2023 NFL Draft was his first shot at running the show, and now he is facing good problems with that group, as several are eligible for and deserving of contract extensions. Looking at 2026, the franchise has 12 overall picks. It's hard to imagine that all will be used, but the simple expectation is the individuals taken on the first two days will be solid contributors. That hasn't always been the case in recent years, despite some success with certain classes.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan looks on as the team sets up in front of fans to workout at the annual Friday Night Lights training camp practice in Latrobe, PA.

In 2024, Khan focused on the trenches and drafted three offensive linemen that have all turned into starters. Despite a glaring need at wide receiver entering that offseason, the only addition was Roman Wilson in the third round. Injuries during his rookie year kept him out of the lineup, and his second campaign wasn't that much more inspiring, with the wideout only hauling in 12 passes.

No one is quite sure what the future holds for Wilson, particularly because a new coaching staff has arrived in Pittsburgh. However, the Steelers' front office remains very much intact. Khan and co. took Wilson for a reason, and it might not be time to give up on him just yet, which is something that was recently discussed by a team insider.

While hosting a chat for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, beat writer Ray Fittipaldo fielded questions from plenty of fans interested in all sorts of topics revolving around the franchise. A contributor was curious about Wilson's job security, as the Steelers haven't really given him much of a chance in his first two professional seasons. Despite a lot of negativity surrounding the wide receiver, the reporter isn't closing the door on the young pass-catcher just yet.

"The new staff believes Wilson has some potential," Fittipaldo wrote. "Plus, there is no way Khan is cutting a player he just drafted in the third round two years ago. They held onto Chase Claypool for 2 1/2 years before trading him, and he was much worse to deal with."

Fittipaldo makes a good point. It doesn't necessarily make sense to move on from Wilson, especially because there are only four wide receivers currently under contract for 2026. Things can always change; however, it appears as if the team truly believes in the former Michigan Wolverine. Unfortunately for Wilson, the organization drafting two wide receivers at the end of April could hurt his stock even more.

Teams don't have success with every single player who is drafted, but Wilson has been disappointing. The door was wide open for him to cement himself within the offense, but nothing has gone his way. Injuries are one thing; however, it was very clear that Aaron Rodgers didn't have much interest in utilizing him throughout the 2025 campaign.

There remains a possibility that the third-year player could break out in 2026. If the team truly does believe in him, then it might not decide to take someone in the first round who would be in line to take his job. There are a lot of smoke and mirrors throughout any offseason, but Fittipaldo's comments are worth noting. It seems like Wilson is going to get one more opportunity to prove himself under new Head Coach Mike McCarthy.

Steelers Seem Focused On Bolstering Receiving Corps

With 12 overall selections and only four wideouts under contract, Pittsburgh is expected to use two picks on receivers that can come in and contribute. Where those rookies are taken could give fans a good idea of how Wilson is truly viewed inside the building. Coaches and executives can say whatever they want when in front of cameras, but the real truth will be revealed when the Steelers invest in the position, which could send Wilson tumbling down the depth chart.
