The Pittsburgh Steelers are nearing the 2026 NFL Draft, and the speculation on who they'll draft is building. The organization has been hosting a variety of prospects with its top-30 visits. These visitors have ranged from offensive linemen, wide receivers, and defensive backs. There isn't a clear direction for what position the Steelers will prioritize with their first-round pick, but with their 12 total selections, there could be an aggressive move in the making, or even a trade down. No matter what, 2026's draft lacks an obvious choice for the Steelers, unlike previous years. General Manager Omar Khan will have his hands full.

In January of 2026, Pittsburgh hired its new head coach, Mike McCarthy. A huge change in scheme as the now-former head coach, Mike Tomlin, was a clear defensive-minded guy. McCarthy brings a resume of high-scoring offense, which he'll call the plays for. This will be his first draft as a member of the Black and Gold, and his vision for the team may differ greatly from Tomlin's. His influence will be felt in how the Steelers create their big boards and which players they decide to take long looks at, just like any head coach. However, after 19 years of Tomlin, a new, powerful voice in the building is a big change for any franchise.
The Steelers brass have been pretty quiet throughout the offseason, and this was spoken about heavily on Kaboly + Mack recently. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly spoke on the lack of rumblings within the front office. He talked about the unclear direction that Pittsburgh's draft plans have taken so far.
"You don't know anything about McCarthy. He brought in four or five quarterbacks already, and there's a potential they don't draft any. I don't know what they're looking for. It's a brand new regime. It's not just one new coach, it's 25 new coaches," Kaboly said.
It seems unclear how they're going to want to attack this draft. McCarthy has a certain type of player that he'll look for in prospects. This regime change will affect who the Steelers target and the way they go about scouting players, as well as doing research. However, the scarcity of information from the front office proves that they're figuring out things internally, as well. New playbooks need to be constructed, schemes, roles of staff, among scouting players, and making depth charts.

The scouting process may have taken a backseat during this coaching change. Scouts and the front office could be finding players that fit McCarthy's mold, while he figures out his way around coaching a new team. As the draft gets closer, McCarthy will probably be more involved in the draft and help with what players he likes for his fits. This will more than likely change as McCarthy settles in Pittsburgh, but as of now, it could just be a lack of intercommunication between the coaching staff and the scouting department, as the coaching staff game plans for the 2026 season.
Steelers Could Use A Successful Draft In 2026
Pittsburgh is coming off an upsetting home playoff loss in the 2025 Wild Card Round. The team has some big holes to fill from departing free agents and some shortcomings from last year. Left guard is a position where there isn't a clear starter. This could be a position that is addressed early on in the 2026 draft and one that has often been speculated to the Steelers. Pittsburgh's left side of the offensive line will be vital in 2026, as its starting left tackle position is another spot that could be foggy. A name often associated with Pittsburgh is Penn State guard Olaivavega Ioane.

This draft will be crucial for the Steelers' future as their veterans continue to age, and the hope is to stay competitive in 2026. A solid rookie class could make this team more dangerous.
