The Pittsburgh Steelers have the entire football world focused on them as this new era kicks off for the 2026 season. With the 2026 NFL Draft set to be hosted in Pittsburgh, the stage is built for a potentially franchise-shifting weekend. Armed with 12 picks, the Steelers are expected to make serious noise and begin shaping the roster under new head coach Mike McCarthy.

Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Omar Khan picks up the phone and has a conversation in the team's war room during the 2023 NFL Draft weekend as he speaks with someone on the other line about important details.

For General Manager Omar Khan, the pressure is undeniable. This marks his first draft without Mike Tomlin alongside him, and all eyes are on how he handles the responsibility. Khan will be looking to prove he can lead this new era with confidence and deliver a home run draft that sets the tone for years to come.

One player drawing early controversy is top wide receiver prospect Makai Lemon. Widely considered one of the most exciting talents in the class, Lemon became polarizing after reports claimed he struggled in Scouting Combine interviews and displayed an odd demeanor. Others pushed back on those claims, calling them unfair, and the debate quickly gained traction. Khan addressed the situation directly, making it clear the noise surrounding Lemon does not align with the team’s experience, though at this time of year, smokescreens are always something to keep in mind.

"Yeah he was outstanding," Khan said while speaking about Lemon. "Yeah, he really was. We had a chance to meet him out in Indy, and he was here. We spent some quality time with him. It was just excellent time spent."

Those comments from Khan only add more intrigue to Lemon’s draft outlook as the noise continues to build. In a process where perception can shift daily, endorsements like that from a general manager carry weight, especially when they directly contradict negative reports that surfaced earlier in the offseason.

For the Steelers, this is the time of year where information becomes difficult to fully trust. Teams across the league often lean into misinformation to protect their draft strategy, making it challenging to separate fact from fiction. Still, Khan’s tone and choice of words suggested a level of sincerity that stood out compared to the usual pre-draft smokescreens.

Steelers' Front Office Could Make Big Statement With Makai Lemon

If Lemon is indeed a player the Steelers value highly, it would not be surprising to see them make an aggressive move to ensure they land him. With the draft taking place in Pittsburgh and a new era beginning under McCarthy, adding a dynamic playmaker like Lemon could be exactly the kind of statement this front office is looking to make.

The Steelers’ wide receiver room has been something that needed improvement for a couple of seasons now. Pittsburgh made a move during the 2026 offseason to bring in veteran wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to the Steel City, and he pairs nicely with DK Metcalf. The Steelers are excited about that duo. However, that hasn’t stopped them from being connected to some of the top wide receivers in this draft. Many pundits fully expect the Steelers to take a couple of wide receivers within their top 100 picks as they continue to build out the offense. Lemon is certainly a player the Steelers could try to land at No. 21 overall.
