While fans won't truly know what the Pittsburgh Steelers' plans are for their first-round pick until draft night, their options have seemingly narrowed. The Steelers are expected to target either offensive line, wide receiver, or defensive back, specifically safety. All are great needs, and would be much-needed upgrades. Wide receiver might be the least urgent of those three now, but the underwhelming play of the past two seasons may sway the franchise's decision. The team hasn't been able to deploy a serviceable group of receivers that can get open on a consistent basis for years. Perhaps on night one of the 2026 NFL Draft, that could change.

Omar Khan addressed the wide receiver position when he acquired former Indianapolis Colts star Michael Pittman Jr. for a late-round pick swap. Pittman provided much-needed relief at the position, but it's still a top need for the team. Luckily for the Steelers, the 2026 draft class has a very nice group of wide receivers with different skill sets. There are some solid slot options in Makai Lemon, KC Concepcion, and Omar Cooper Jr., as well as the bigger guys like Denzel Boston, Jordyn Tyson, and Carnell Tate. Head Coach Mike McCarthy has made it known he likes bigger targets, making Boston and Tyson more prominent. Some analysts see Tyson as the best receiver in the draft class, but his health seems to be holding him back, potentially hurting his draft stock enough to fall to the 21st pick where the Steelers currently stand.
The Steelers' newest receiver, Pittman, was interviewed at a National Flag Football Event sponsored by Toyota, where he gave his take on the team potentially drafting Tyson. Pittman made it known he would love for Pittsburgh to land the former Arizona State Sun Devil, believing he would fit in great with his jump ball ability.
"We definitely could like, use him. I mean just his talent, like his jump ball, stuff that he does. I think that he would fit in great here," Pittman said. "And just told him embrace it, and to cherish every single moment. It may not go exactly the way that he had planned, but it'll all work out."
Tyson's toughness has been called into question due to his long list of injuries. He did not participate in the NFL Combine and held his Pro Day just six days before the NFL Draft. He ran routes, but did not run a 40-yard dash. That was likely to prevent further injury, and/or prevent any potential incidents further hurting his draft stock. The 21-year-old will almost certainly still go in the first round, but probably not in the top-10 like originally thought. That could be huge for the Steelers.

Tyson could be an absolute weapon, lining up opposite of DK Metcalf, throwing Pittman in the slot. One thing the Steelers' wide receiver room lacked in 2025 was big-play ability. If Tyson is their pick, they'd have at least three players who could do just that. That would make the quarterback's life a whole lot easier, whether that'd be Aaron Rodgers, Will Howard, or perhaps a rookie from this class.
Steelers Should Look To Move Up In The First Round
Picking at 21st overall, there's no telling what the draft board will look like. The team has 12 draft picks to work with, five of which are in the top-100. A trade-up wouldn't be hard, especially with teams looking to move back to accumulate more draft capital in 2027. This could be a great opportunity for the Steelers to draft their next great wide receiver in their city of origin.

Hopefully, the organization finds its next franchise guy at receiver. The opportunity will be there; it's up to Khan to make the big decision and either move up, or hope someone falls.
