The Pittsburgh Steelers will be on the clock at 21st overall in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The team also holds 12 overall picks and three in the third-round. While Pittsburgh has several positions of need such as wide receiver and offensive lineman, they are believed to potentially look at a quarterback in the later rounds as well.

Former Miami Hurricanes QB Carson Beck looks on during the National Championship game.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network recently mentioned some news about Carson Beck on why the young QB may not be available later on in the draft for Pittsburgh. In fact, Pelissero discussed how if a team needs a quarterback, they could trade up for Beck.
Beck played a total of six college seasons, five of those coming with the Georgia Bulldogs, and the final year with the Miami Hurricanes. Beck backed up quarterback Stetson Bennett during Georgia's back-to-back National Championships in 2021 and 2022. Now, Pelissero notes that the reason a team could trade up for him to select him on night one is the work he put in leading up to the event.
"Carson Beck has really helped himself through the pre-draft process," Pelissero said. "And as multiple people I spoke to brought up again, given the fact that we've only got 13 to 15 guys with first-round grades in this entire draft, regardless of position, don't be 100% shocked if there is a scenario that somebody says, 'I need a quarterback. I'll even trade up into the bottom of round one to get Carson Beck on Thursday night.'"
Should a team make that move happen, that eliminates one quarterback off the Steelers' radar that they were believed to have interest in. The team has also hosted other quarterbacks for pre-draft visits in Drew Allar and Taylen Green. Those two quarterback prospects will most likely go in the later rounds. That would leave the organization with some backup plans, but Beck being selected on night one would take a potential later round value pick off the board for Pittsburgh.

Former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar prepares to throw a football as he warms up prior to the team competing in a collegiate football event.
Allar experienced an underwhelming college career with the Penn State Nittany Lions. He essentially peaked in 2024 in State College, as the team made a trip to the College Football Playoff Semifinal. Allar threw for 3,327 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2024. However, 2025 was a far different story, as Allar's season was cut short and his head coach was fired about halfway through the season.
Green is coming off of back-to-back strong seasons with the Arkansas Razorbacks, where he was a dynamic playmaker by adding in his mobility and scoring eight rushing touchdowns in 2024 and 2025.
Steelers' Focus Should Be On Rounding Out The Roster
While the Steelers do have the flexibility to not just target positions of need given their draft capital, a quarterback should be far down on their list of priorities. Everyone still awaits a decision from Aaron Rodgers about his return to Pittsburgh, but the belief is that he will be back. This would then allow quarterback Will Howard to have another year to learn under Rodgers and potentially take over the reigns in 2027.
What also benefits the team is that if they do not fully believe in Howard as they head into 2027, the 2027 quarterback class is expected to be stronger than the one this year. That allows them to be strategic in their move to truly start searching for their next franchise quarterback. While the Beck news may not be great for the team, they did an excellent job of filling holes on their roster this offseason and can now round it out in the draft.

The Steelers should strongly consider rounding out their wide receiver room to help bolster a unit that will be led by DK Metcalf and the newly-acquired Michael Pittman Jr. From there, they can then also look at offensive line, given the uncertainty surrounding Broderick Jones.
