The Pittsburgh Steelers traded WR George Pickens ahead of the 2025 season, and in exchange they received the 76th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and a fifth-round pick in the 2027 Draft. When Pittsburgh was on the clock, new Head Coach Mike McCarthy and GM Omar Khan made the shocking choice to draft QB Drew Allar out of Penn State.

This sparked viral reactions across social media, as Allar is controversial because he was once viewed as a superstar NFL prospect who saw his stock drop toward the end of his college career, and then his injury made matters even more complex. At one point, Allar was seen as a generational talent. If he can develop and regain his confidence while working with McCarthy, some believe he could be the future.
The Steelers clearly see a long-term project worth investing in, despite the questions surrounding his recent college performance. Much will depend on how quickly he adapts to the speed and complexity of the NFL game. Allar spoke with Rob King, Matt Williamson, and Ed Troup to open Day 3 of the SNR Draft Marathon, where he shared the challenge McCarthy created for him during the pre-draft process.
"Yeah, the first time I met with them was at the combine in a formal interview setting," Allar said while speaking about his Steelers pre-draft process on Saturday. "That was a really good one. That was probably my hardest formal interview I had, but it was also the most fun I had. Just because I was really getting to understand how Coach McCarthy sees things in terms of the game of football, and he asked me lots of questions about why we did things we did at Penn State... it was just really a fun conversation the whole time with Coach McCarthy just about protections and different route concepts."
That challenge reportedly centered on how Allar handled pressure situations during private workouts and film sessions, where McCarthy pushed him to operate in a much faster decision-making environment than he experienced in college. He also questioned Allar on all the controversial moments and clearly liked his answers.

Another cool tidbit that Allar revealed was that he is already familiar with Steelers' Tom Arth because he recruited him when he was coaching at Akron. According to Allar, those sessions forced him to adjust his processing speed and prove he could maintain accuracy while working under constant defensive simulation stress, something Pittsburgh’s staff prioritized heavily in their evaluation.
Allar said that experience ultimately shaped how the Steelers viewed him heading into the draft, as it gave them more confidence that he could transition into their system despite concerns about his late-college struggles and injury history. Based on his answer, it sounds like the process helped separate him from other quarterbacks in the class and played a key role in Pittsburgh’s decision to make the surprising move on draft night.
Steelers' QB Room Will Continue To Dominate Headlines
It’s no secret that the Steelers’ quarterback room is going to continue to dominate the media cycle. Of course, Pittsburgh is waiting to see whether Aaron Rodgers will return for the 2026 season or not. The Steelers now have two young quarterbacks in Will Howard and Allar, while Mason Rudolph has become a trade candidate.

With so much uncertainty at the position, every move Pittsburgh makes will be under a microscope. How the situation unfolds over the offseason could ultimately define the direction of the franchise moving forward. It's safe to say that the decisions made in the coming months will likely shape both the depth chart and long-term outlook for years to come.
