The Pittsburgh Steelers were likely far from thrilled with how the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft unfolded, even if this is the kind of chaos that often defines draft night. Teams spend weeks building boards, targeting specific players, and lining up contingency plans, only to see those plans disrupted in a matter of seconds when another franchise makes an unexpected move up the board. For Pittsburgh, that reality hit directly in a moment that was supposed to feel like the start of something special.

At the time, Steelers General Manager Omar Khan was reportedly on the phone with wide receiver Makai Lemon, informing him that Pittsburgh was preparing to select him with the 21st overall pick. With the draft being hosted in Pittsburgh, it would have been a memorable moment for both the organization and the player, as Lemon was set to walk on stage and be embraced by a home crowd that has seen its share of franchise cornerstones over the years.
That moment, however, quickly changed. Lemon could be heard asking, 'Why is Philly calling me?' to Khan, signaling that the situation had shifted in real time. Shortly after, it became clear that the Dallas Cowboys had traded out of the No. 20 pick, allowing the Philadelphia Eagles to move up and select Lemon one spot ahead of Pittsburgh. What was shaping up to be a perfect draft-night storyline for the Steelers instead turned into a familiar reminder of how quickly the board can change.
While reports surfaced suggesting Pittsburgh’s front office was furious with Dallas for the sequence of events, the Cowboys’ leadership pushed back on that characterization. According to quotes obtained by Jon Machota of The Athletic, both Stephen Jones and Jerry Jones disputed the notion that the Steelers were upset with their organization’s decision-making. Stephen Jones stated, "That’s not right," while Jerry Jones added simply, "Not at all."
"I don’t want to get on their bad side," Jerry Jones said while speaking with several members of the Dallas media. "I’m sorry if they’re mad. But, boy, I’ll tell you what, we’ve had it happen to us a bunch of times. It traded right out from under us. That’s why we (traded) those (fifth-round picks to move up to get Caleb Downs)."
It is also worth noting that, according to Machota, Jerry spoke highly of the Rooney family and of his former head coach and current Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, helping to temper any suggestion of lingering tension between the organizations.

Despite the brief draft-night confusion, there was no indication of lasting friction behind the scenes between Pittsburgh and Dallas.
Steelers Pivot To Draft Arizona State Star Max Iheanachor 21st Overall In 2026 NFL Draft
The Steelers ultimately responded by selecting Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor with the 21st overall pick. Early reports suggest Pittsburgh’s front office was just as enthusiastic about landing Iheanachor as they had been about their original target, viewing him as a strong long-term fit for their offensive line plans.

Still, as with many draft-night twists, the discussion is likely to linger. As Lemon and Iheanachor begin their NFL careers with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh respectively, comparisons will inevitably follow them, along with questions about what might have been if the board had broken differently.
Essentially, Jones was telling the Steelers that if they wanted to draft Lemon, they should have traded up to 19 to do so. Such is life in the NFL. The Steelers still got a player they were super excited about.
