The Pittsburgh Steelers watched as their longtime Head Coach Mike Tomlin elected to step away after the 2025 season. Tomlin felt that nearly two decades coaching the Steelers was enough, and he wanted to experience life after the grueling demands of the NFL. However, some drama has unfolded with the New England Patriots, and it could force Tomlin to make a very difficult decision sooner than he was expecting.

Thomas R. Petersen, an NFL reporter for NFL Network, the New York Post, and Bleacher Report, has revealed something interesting vis the Daily Mail. The Patriots are reportedly monitoring the situation with Mike Vrabel. It is no secret by now that Vrabel has been entangled in a scandal involving NFL insider Dianna Russini. We are not going to speculate on that, but what is interesting is that the Patriots are preparing for a potential crisis, and if they are forced to move on from Vrabel, Tomlin would likely get the call.

"It's gotten to the point where the Patriots are preparing in case Mike Vrabel resigns, per @DailyMail," Peterson said. "And it's down to specifics like they're eyeing Mike Tomlin."

If that scenario unfolds, it would create one of the most surprising coaching moves in recent NFL memory. For Pittsburgh, it could also reopen questions about whether Tomlin’s departure was truly permanent or just a pause in his Steelers tenure. The Patriots were just in the Super Bowl and are a very young team. Naturally, if Vrabel did resign, then Tomlin would have basically everything he had in Pittsburgh, but with a better roster built to win right now. He would immediately get a franchise quarterback in Drake Maye as well. However, there is still a long way to go before Tomlin could truly end up as the Patriots head coach.

The first part is that he just signed on to join NBC as an analyst. Obviously, if the Patriots job were to become open and they wanted to hire Tomlin, he would be forced to make a very difficult decision relatively quickly after his Steelers tenure. For Tomlin, the timing makes everything even more complicated. Moving into a media role with NBC gives him distance from the daily grind of coaching, but it also keeps him very visible around the league. That matters because any serious interest from a team like New England would instantly shift the conversation back toward a return to the sideline.

Around the league, executives are already watching how this situation develops because a coach of Tomlin’s caliber rarely becomes available, even briefly. The Patriots, meanwhile, are trying to maintain stability after a strong season, but the uncertainty at the top always creates ripple effects throughout the organization. Another critical thing to remember is that if the Patriots did want to hire Tomlin, they would have to pull off a trade. That could be similar to the Sean Payton deal, where a first-round pick was required if he returns to coaching in 2026 and the Patriots want him.

Former Steelers' Head Coach Mike Tomlin looks shocked as he speaks with the media after a loss in the 2025 season.

If things were to escalate quickly, Tomlin would not have much time to weigh his options. Leaving Pittsburgh was already a major life decision, and reversing course so soon would require a level of urgency few coaches ever face. It also raises questions about how he views his legacy and whether he feels his work in Pittsburgh ended on his own terms.

For now, everything remains hypothetical, but the league is paying attention. When a name like Tomlin enters any opening, even indirectly, it changes the entire coaching market overnight. The idea of Tomlin coaching for the Patriots and not the Steelers would certainly feel strange for fans to see. Many Steelers fans would also get a lot of answers if Tomlin inherited the Patriots roster and was able to turn things around.
