The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a rough couple of seasons when it comes to consistent play from the wide receiver corps. As 2026 Organized Team Activities (OTAs) inch closer, the franchise has set itself up to have DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. leading the way. The organization also selected Germie Bernard in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. It's hard to rely on a rookie, but the offense may have to, particularly if there is an injury to one of the top two contributors. Then, there is the mystery of Roman Wilson, a 2024 third-rounder who has yet to blossom into a productive player.

While Wilson may simply be better off getting a fresh start somewhere else, he should have an opportunity to finally prove himself in 2026. That is, unless the Steelers' front office does something to add to the unit. General Manager Omar Khan is rather unpredictable, so a signing or trade could quite literally happen at any moment prior to training camp beginning in late July.
Beat writer Chris Adamski joined the Breaking With Benz podcast on Thursday to talk about the current state of the Steelers. One of the more intriguing groups to pay attention to as the summer months progress will be the wide receivers. Because of the uncertainty surrounding both Bernard and Wilson, Adamski is confident that another move is going to be made.
"I thought they'd bring in another wide receiver by now, once the draft ended," Adamski said. "They needed to get three wide receivers is what I'm getting at, three legitimate [dependable] wide receivers this offseason. My perspective is there's still a chance Roman Wilson has to play, which means they need to find another receiver. I still think one way or the other before we get to either Latrobe, or the end of the preseason, there will be another veteran wide receiver in here."
It's hard to imagine an Aaron Rodgers-led offense that would only have two veteran playmakers at wideout. A signing could come shortly after the veteran signal-caller puts pen to paper. The team's quarterback would be able to have some say as to who would potentially come in and help out. The free-agent pool is rather weak, so there are not many options there. However, a trade can't be ruled out, either.

Adamski's reporting has to make fans wonder if the Steelers are currently content with the group of pass-catchers or not. Metcalf and Pittman should make for a formidable duo, but injuries happen, and it's hard to firmly rely on a first-year player such as Bernard. Pittsburgh might have no choice but to go out and bring someone in who would be both reliable and productive when called upon.
It's clear that Wilson might not be trusted by the franchise, which is why Adamski noted that going into the 2026 campaign with him as the fourth option is not going to be a good idea. Head Coach Mike McCarthy is known for using wide receivers over tight ends, so one injury to someone in the top three would instantly slot Wilson into the lineup. If this is something that the staff, or Rodgers, is uncomfortable with, then a late offseason addition is almost certainly on the horizon.

Steelers Hoping To Have A More Dynamic Offense In 2026
Pittsburgh won't be able to get away with having a subpar offense with McCarthy at the helm. Now that the franchise has an offensive-minded head coach, a lot of the attention will be on that side of the ball. The defense remains talented, but the fan base has been desperate for a consistent group on offense. Wide receivers are going to be utilized plenty, which is why the Steelers might currently be weighing their options as to who could come in and jump ahead of Wilson on the depth chart.
