Former Steelers Fan Favorite Revealed Devastating Message From Hall Of Famer That Ended His Career

The Pittsburgh Steelers want to take good care of their players for the most part. If one is a respected, loyal member of the team, the coaches and front office do everything they can to keep that player happy and make him a one-helmet guy. The franchise has a saying: once a Steeler, always a Steeler. Most men who are a part of this organization at any part of their careers continue to associate themselves as a member of the Black and Gold for the rest of their lives. That is how ownership wants it to be.

Sometimes, football can be a cruel business. Things always happen behind the scenes that teams don't want, whether they initiate it or not. Former linebacker and fan favorite Vince Williams took to X and revealed what an unnamed Hall-of-Famer told him before his career ended.

For as great of a player and as beloved as he was, that has to be a massive gut punch. This is where the cruelty of the business comes in. The Steelers love Williams; the fans loved him; nearly everyone loved him for the most part. Everyone also knows what NFL truly stands for: not for long. It didn't seem like he was good enough to start anymore, and at that point, his career was coming close to an end anyways.

Williams was released after the 2020 season as a cap casualty. He was brought back to the team about a month later, but he eventually retired that July. Odds were he knew that he was about to get released, so he took that Hall of Famer's words to heart. Instead of taking his release and possibly signing to be a backup / mentor on another team, he just accepted his retirement and went out on his own terms.

During his eight-year career in Pittsburgh, he played whatever role he was asked to. He rotated between special teams ace, depth piece, run-down specialist, and full-time linebacker. He had an amazing year in 2017, where he had a career-high eight sacks and 89 total tackles to go with 11 tackles for loss and an interception. Even in his final season, he had 70 tackles and three sacks to go with around 700 total snaps. That's not terrible at all.

Usually, players have a slow, steady decline as they get older and older. For more physical players like Williams, that decline can sometimes drop off of a cliff. He typically did the dirty work, as opposed to the flashy stuff. His body definitely took a beating throughout his career. It seems like that finally caught up with him in 2021, and that's when he remembered the advice of that Hall-of-Famer. That's when he hung up his cleats for good.

Steelers Struggled To Replicate His Production

After Williams retired, the Steelers had a big need for a big linebacker that could plug up the rushing lanes and do the dirty work. They kept acquiring big-name veteran linebackers like Joe Schobert and Myles Jack to rack up these high tackle numbers and provide some stability at the position. It did not work well, as that position group was consistently a weak point during those couple seasons. Pittsburgh needed more.

In 2023, everything changed. They got a new linebackers coach in Aaron Curry and completely overhauled the position group. Elandon Roberts became the run-stuffing monster that could fill Williams' shoes while Cole Holcomb was flying all over the field until he suffered a catastrophic knee injury. Now, the Steelers are building for the future at that spot with Payton Wilson learning and developing so he could eventually wear the green dot.
