The Pittsburgh Steelers seemed to consistently underperform throughout the course of the last 10 seasons or so of Mike Tomlin's tenure as the head coach of the organization. Following his decision to step down back in January, there are a lot of hopeful, yet anxious fans because of what could lie ahead. One big question mark will be the defensive side of the ball. A lot of blame was placed on Tomlin for the inconsistencies that have come from the unit, specifically because it has been the highest-paid group throughout the entire NFL for several years. New defensive coordinator Patrick Graham will be working to change that reputation.

The reviews from players have already been high for the aforementioned Graham, who has had stints as a defensive play-caller in several different cities. Now, he is working with the most talented collective that he has ever been with. Because of the firepower all around, it is expected that the Steelers will be able to rely on the defense week-in and week-out.
Subtle hiccups will always happen because no side of the ball can be perfect, but Pittsburgh has to get a better effort from Graham's contingent. Consistency will be the key, and there are already signs coming from the building that hint at the fact that the players know how special the defense could end up being.
It feels like almost every year someone comes out and says how talent the unit is, but it feels a little bit different in 2026 because of the revamped coaching staff. If the right individual is running the show, the Steelers could be a nightmare for opposing offenses. That's what Alex Highsmith told Ray Fittipaldo and other reporters on Monday when speaking with the media.
"We have the players to be an elite defense. We all know that," Highsmith said. "For us, right now, this is the start of the process — guys being here and building the culture."
A new coach means things are going to change; the hope is that they do for the better. Graham is challenging his guys early, and Highsmith reiterated once again that the rest of the NFL should know that Pittsburgh's defense has a goal of being dominant.
"We know that we have the talent and the players to be that type of defense," Highsmith stated. "That should be a realistic expectation for us to perform like that."
Time will tell how all of this all pans out; however, it will be hard for fans to not be excited, especially because there are a lot of new faces that could possibly get more out of the group than Tomlin was able to.

The Steelers have either focused on the run and gotten torched by the pass, or vice versa. In some instances, the defense got completely destroyed altogether. This is what must be fixed if Graham and co. want to become one of the league's best. Highsmith wasn't shy about stating— even in May — that the team is expecting the crew to be top-notch.
There are plenty of veterans and Pittsburgh will rely on them to adjust to Graham's philosophies accordingly. It seems to already be off to a good start and the next few months will be absolutely crucial when it comes to everyone getting on the same page and preparing for meaningful football.

Steelers Have To Be A Top 10 Defense During 2026 Season
Pittsburgh's offense will hopefully gel early in the season, but the offensive line remains a question mark, as does the receiving corps. The defense will have to be stout early and if what Highsmith said on Monday is any indication, the group is prepared to carry the team early on. Being middle of the pack is not going to help McCarthy reach the goals he has for his squad, so dominating right off the bat in 2026 will come as a very crucial piece for the defense.
