Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Completely Contradicts Front Office In First Media Appearance Since Re-Signing

The Pittsburgh Steelers have more clarity on the 2026 season now that veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers has officially re-signed with the franchise. He will be the starter in 2026 after another offseason that was full of speculation when it came to that position for the franchise. He is officially back, and he will be reuniting with his former head coach from when he played for the Green Bay Packers, Mike McCarthy. The two won a Super Bowl together, and the hiring of McCarthy had to have played some sort of role in the four-time league MVP deciding to continue his playing career with the Steelers.

It was clear that a big reason for Rodgers deciding to sign with the Steelers during the 2025 offseason was due to former head coach Mike Tomlin. The two always had a ton of respect for one another, and the quarterback wanted to play under the coach before his career ended. When Tomlin decided to step down after the 2025 season ended, it felt like Rodgers' time in Pittsburgh would be done as well. The hiring of McCarthy shocked many people, and his history with Rodgers made some fans and media members speculate that their past relationship was a reason for the hiring.

Whenever General Manager Omar Khan and Team President and Owner Art Rooney II spoke to the media, they were asked about this, and the two always denied that the two were connected. Rodgers contradicted that on Wednesday when he spoke to the media and claimed that he suggested that the organization hire McCarthy.

To be clear, Rodgers did not say that the team should hire McCarthy, he just suggested that he should be in the mix. It does make sense considering McCarthy's experience and success as a coach in the NFL, but it is also fair for fans to be skeptical about the hiring due to the past relationship between the two. Him suggesting McCarthy as a candidate also confirmed that he did play a minimal role in the hiring.

It will be a full-circle moment for Rodgers as he will get to end his playing career under McCarthy, and hopefully the two can have some sort of success in Pittsburgh. The duo has been on several deep playoff runs over the years, and that is something that Steelers fans are desperate for moving forward. The lack of postseason success has been a major talking point in Pittsburgh over the last decade, but that could change with the two Green Bay legends joining forces for the Steelers.

It is also funny to see that Rodgers suggested McCarthy, and claimed he was someone with an "outside perspective". Rodgers had played for the team during the 2025 season and he played under McCarthy for the majority of his career, so he probably has the opposite of an outside perspective when it comes to this situation.

Steelers Need Aaron Rodgers To Be More Comfortable In 2026

Rodgers' numbers for the 2025 season look decent, but he didn't truly play all that well. That isn't entirely on him as he had a weak receiving corps and a questionable offensive line, and both of those areas should be improved in 2026. The Steelers added both Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard at wide receiver, which should only help the veteran quarterback. It is also reasonable to expect the offensive line to perform better in 2026, which should allow Rodgers to feel more comfortable while holding onto the football and looking downfield.

What do you think about Rodgers suggesting McCarthy as a candidate for the organization? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
