The Pittsburgh Steelers have a decent idea of what the team is going to look like heading into the 2026 season, but there are a few questions and surprises along the offensive line. It was known that the left side of that unit was going to be up in the air, but the coaching staff has attacked this issue by shuffling the entire offensive line outside of center Zach Frazier. This leaves a few starting jobs up for grabs while also keeping fans speculating as to who the starting five will be on the field at Acrisure Stadium to open the season in September.

Organized Team Activities (OTAs) began on Monday for the Steelers, and the offensive line included Frazier at center, Troy Fautanu at left tackle, Mason McCormick at left guard, Spencer Anderson at right guard, and Dylan Cook at right tackle. The biggest surprise with that lineup is that McCormick and Fautanu have switched sides of the offensive line, to positions that they haven't played since college. McCormick played right guard for Pittsburgh over the last two seasons, but now he seems to be switching sides, along with Fautanu. This put Anderson at right guard, a position he is familiar with from his time in college at Maryland.
Anderson has wanted a chance at right guard in Pittsburgh for quite some time now, which beat writer Ray Fittipaldo mentioned on 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday.
"The speculation about guard, to me, that's the interesting one," Fittipaldo said. "Because Mason McCormick has been a right guard ever since he arrived here, but in college, he was a left guard. Spencer Anderson told me last year in training camp he was a little bit frustrated he wasn't playing right guard. Maybe there's conversations being had behind the scenes."
Pittsburgh has had several offensive linemen playing out of their natural position over the last few years, and it has been something that has been questioned by the fan base repeatedly. Obviously certain linemen are extremely versatile, but that doesn't mean every big man can play every position and both sides in the trenches. It just doesn't work that way, and now players are being put in positions where they are most comfortable.

Anderson has been pretty good for the Steelers over the last three seasons as a depth piece and as a swing tackle. He was an extra offensive lineman for the offense during the 2025 season, and Pittsburgh had a ton of success with him on the field. He is now getting a chance to win the starting right guard job, with Brock Hoffman and Gennings Dunker being other names to consider. Anderson has wanted a shot to start at the position in the past, and now it seems he will get his chance.
"I'm not entirely sure how this is going to play out," Fittipaldo said. "Spencer Anderson wanted a shot to play right guard last year. He never got that opportunity. But now he is, so we'll see how that goes."
The fourth-year offensive lineman is entering the final season of his rookie deal, which means he has a chance to earn himself a decent amount of money during the 2027 offseason. Winning the starting job and performing well is going to be critical for Anderson.

Dunker is a player that fans in Pittsburgh want to see on the field. He is making the switch from tackle to guard as he transitions to the NFL, and he should get a fair shot to win the right guard spot. Even if Anderson or Hoffman take the job, there is a chance they will be on a short leash. That is especially true as both players are in contract years.
