Steelers' Defensive Coaching Failure May Have Destroyed More Careers Than Fans Realize

The Pittsburgh Steelers fan base had grown increasingly frustrated with the former coaching staff. Under former head coach Mike Tomlin, many fans were openly calling for change, largely due to the team’s continued playoff struggles. Pittsburgh had not won a playoff game since the 2016 season, and after the 2025 season ended in another home playoff blowout loss by 24 points, Tomlin ultimately decided it was time to step away from coaching the Steelers. In his place, new head coach Mike McCarthy was brought in, along with an exciting new staff that has already generated optimism in Steeler Nation.

McCarthy hired Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator, a move that has sparked significant enthusiasm among fans. The general consensus on Graham is that during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders, he consistently got the most out of his defensive unit despite limited talent and investment outside of star edge rusher Maxx Crosby. Perhaps the strongest testament to Graham’s coaching ability is that he was still able to limit explosive plays despite the roster limitations he faced. In contrast, the Steelers struggled heavily under Tomlin and former defensive coordinator Teryl Austin to prevent chunk plays even with one of the most expensive defenses in the NFL.

Veteran cornerback Darius Slay spent part of the 2025 season in Pittsburgh, but his tenure was short-lived. The team and Slay parted ways after just 10 games. During the 2026 offseason, Slay publicly criticized Tomlin and Austin, describing their defensive schemes as outdated, overly simplistic, and ineffective. He suggested the system relied more on hope than sound structure.

Further analysis from @Steelers_DB on X has also pointed to concerns that Austin and Tomlin’s defensive approach may have contributed to cornerback Cory Trice not developing as expected in Pittsburgh. It raises broader questions about how many other players may have been impacted by an ineffective and outdated defensive scheme.

The first thing to highlight is that Trice was a seventh-round pick who struggled to stay healthy throughout his time in Pittsburgh. That context is important, as durability issues were a primary reason he was ultimately waived by the team. However, there is also a fair discussion to be had about how he was used when he did see the field.

In one notable situation, Trice was reportedly placed in a high-leverage matchup and asked to cover Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase one-on-one on command. As expected, the result was a difficult moment for the young corner as Chase scored likely the easiest touchdown of his caeer. As @Steelers_DB pointed out on X, Trice even appeared confused afterward, suggesting he was simply executing the assignment he was given and questioning the coaching instructions in real time.

Steelers Had A Larger Issue At Hand Under Former Coaching Staff

The larger issue is not just the outcome of that play, but the broader context around player development and deployment. Trice went onto the field, followed the coaching plan, and the result was a clear mismatch that exposed him.

That moment has fueled further discussion among Steelers fans about whether outdated defensive schemes and questionable usage decisions may have impacted not only Trice, but also other players such as Slay and others who passed through the system. Based off of Slay's comments, and the context of what several Steelers defenders put on tape. It's safe to say there's some truth there.
