Throughout the past several years, the Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive line has supposed to have been a consistent area of that side of the ball. Whether it is Cameron Heyward or recently drafted Derrick Harmon, the front line has been very solid for the team over the recent years when healthy. Pittsburgh is historically known to out work the opposition and beat it in the trenches, and the roster always takes pride in that. The Steelers are looking to continue the reputation with the bright future of the front line of the defense.

In 2025, the Steelers' interior defensive line struggled to finish plays and control the line of scrimmage, and it showed in key late-game stands. Keeanu Benton’s emergence gives the Steelers a more reliable anchor upfront as well.

After flashes early in his career, Benton enters 2026 as a stronger, more consistent presence for stuffing the run, collapsing pockets, and allowing the edge rushers to attack more aggressively. His growth helps give the defense a clearer identity and renewed confidence. However, Benton is not immune to facing criticism. One of the biggest issues that he has faced was that he struggled to hold up against double teams that he would face from opposing offensive lines.

This is where second-year player Yahya Black can step in and make his impact. Newly-hired defensive line coach Domata Peko even had high praise for Black and said he can be a stud in the middle. Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette detailed how the big man could make a difference.

"New defensive line coach Domata Peko believes second-year defensive lineman Yahya Black can be 'one of the best nose tackles in the game.' Moving Black to nose tackle would give the Steelers more beef in the middle and allow Benton to play over guards and tackles more often," Fittipaldo wrote. "It’s a switch many believed Tomlin would make last season, but it never materialized."

What makes Black such an intriguing addition is the type of impact he can have without necessarily filling up the stat sheet. At his size, he has the ability to control the line of scrimmage and force offenses to change how they attack the Steelers defense.

Offensive coordinators understand the importance of winning in the trenches, and Black's presence could make that task significantly more difficult. His strength allows him to anchor against double teams, clog running lanes, and prevent offensive linemen from reaching the second level.

That skill set is exactly what Pittsburgh has valued in its defensive linemen for years. The Steelers have long relied on dominant interior defenders who can do the dirty work and create opportunities for those around them. Black fits that mold perfectly. While some defensive tackles make their living by chasing statistics, Black's value comes from his ability to occupy blockers and disrupt plays before they ever have a chance to develop.

His arrival could have a ripple effect throughout the entire defense. Linebackers would benefit from cleaner paths to the football, edge rushers could see more favorable pass-rushing situations, and fellow defensive linemen would have more opportunities to attack one-on-one matchups. Those contributions may not always show up in the box score, but they often determine whether a defense is successful over the course of a season.

This allows other players on the defense more room to operate, most notably Benton, who had 5.5 in 2025. Black's emergence could seriously boost the number of sacks fans could see from Benton, and it could pay dividends for the defensive front as a whole.

Steelers Should Have More Versatile Defensive Line In 2026

If Black develops the way the Steelers believe he can, he has the potential to become a foundational piece of the defensive front for years to come. His combination of size, strength, and ability to command attention from blockers gives Pittsburgh another weapon in the middle of the defense. Even if his impact isn't always measured by sacks or tackles, his presence could be one of the biggest reasons the Steelers defense continues to rank among the league's best in 2026.

While the season progresses, Black will have every opportunity to prove why the Steelers invested in him. If he can consistently win at the point of attack and help control the trenches, Pittsburgh's defense could become even more difficult to face.

For a team built on toughness and physical football, Black appears to be a perfect fit. Pittsburgh will look to build off the youth development on the defensive line and continue to have a front that can consistently get pressure and set the tone for the rest of the unit to build off of their strengths.
