Steelers Hear Wild Warning From Bengals QB Joe Burrow: "Go Back And Watch What I Said"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into a new era as they prepare for a pivotal first season under Head Coach Mike McCarthy, following a major transition after the 2025 season when Mike Tomlin stepped down. With a reshaped coaching staff and several new faces across the roster, Pittsburgh enters a fresh chapter while trying to maintain its status as an AFC North contender. After a strong recent run, the Steelers will be looking to defend their division crown, but the road ahead will not be easy.

Across the division, Joe Burrow is working his way back after a frustrating stretch of seasons impacted by injuries. When healthy, Burrow remains one of the NFL’s most dangerous quarterbacks, and Cincinnati continues to build around its elite receiving duo of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Still, questions remain about whether the Bengals' defense can rise to the level needed for a true championship push.

The AFC North remains highly volatile. The Cleveland Browns are entering a new phase after major organizational changes, while the Baltimore Ravens are also adjusting to a reshaped identity under new leadership. With so much turnover across the division, the balance of power is far from settled.

According to Ben Baby of ESPN, Burrow believes the Bengals could be on the verge of a dominant stretch reminiscent of his 2019 LSU championship season, when his team went undefeated and defeated multiple top-10 opponents. Whether that confidence translates to Super Bowl success will be one of the defining storylines of the 2026 season.

"You go back and watch what I said before the 2019 season at LSU," Burrow said. "I feel very similarly about this team. I'm so excited to get started and get moving. I wish we ramped this right into training camp so we can continue to improve. I feel like there's so much greatness we'll be able to achieve this year that I'm just excited to get going."

The Bengals’ defense was historically poor in the season prior, but they made a clear push to correct that in the 2026 offseason with a major overhaul. Cincinnati went out and added marquee defensive talent, including Dexter Lawrence II, Jonathan Allen, Boye Mafe, and Bryan Cook, among others. While it remains to be seen how quickly the group can come together, the overall talent level on that side of the ball has undeniably improved.

Offensively, the Bengals are still expected to be among the league’s elite. Chase, Higgins, and Burrow, when healthy, have consistently produced historic numbers together, and that core has never been the question. Burrow appears to be sending a message not only to the Steelers, but to the rest of the NFL, signaling confidence in Cincinnati’s championship potential. His comparison to the 2019 Tigers reflects the level of belief he has in this roster, especially after what he views as a strong offseason reset.

Steelers Looking To Defend AFC North Crown

The AFC North is once again shaping up to be one of the league’s most competitive divisions. The Steelers, led by Aaron Rodgers on what will be his final run, are expected to contend, while Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry keep the Ravens firmly in the mix.

Nothing will come easy in a division defined by physical play and elite quarterback talent. Steelers fans will hope Burrow is overstating Cincinnati’s leap, but with the additions they made, many analysts believe the Bengals are better positioned than they have been in years.
