Steelers Have Every Reason To Believe DK Metcalf Is Primed For Greatest Season Yet

The Pittsburgh Steelers thought they had finally addressed the wide receiver position when they traded for DK Metcalf ahead of the 2025 NFL season. It was a major and expensive investment, with Metcalf carrying a contract that pays him roughly $33 million per year under his current extension. It is not a cheap move by any means, but Pittsburgh clearly viewed it as a necessary one to help elevate Aaron Rodgers and stabilize the passing game.

In their first season together, Rodgers and Metcalf had moments, but they never quite developed the level of chemistry many expected when the deal was made. In his first year in the Steel City, Metcalf recorded 59 receptions for 850 receiving yards and six touchdowns. While those numbers were solid, they fell short of the explosive production Pittsburgh envisioned. To be fair, Metcalf did not have much help around him, as he was often the only true receiving threat defenses had to gameplan for. That made consistent separation difficult and put even more pressure on him in coverage.

That is why 2026 could be shaping up as a breakout year. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly has pointed to the additions of Michael Pittman Jr., Germie Bernard, and another year of continuity with Rodgers as factors that could finally unlock the offense. With more weapons around him and a more balanced passing attack, Metcalf may be in line for his best season yet in Pittsburgh.

"I’m going to take this over to the wide receiver room," Kaboly said while speaking on Steelers Collective. "I am going to say DK Metcalf. He has got to be the DK Metcalf that we saw in the first four or five games, the difference maker. The guy we saw in Ireland making those big plays, the catches and runs. He needs to be the legit $25 [to $35] million wide receiver, the guy that can go down the field, the guy that can make every catch possible and a red zone threat."

It’s no secret the Steelers had to make some upgrades to the wide receiver room.

The Steelers traded for Pittman and then drafted Bernard in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft after moving up to pick 47 to get him.

"Now that will be based off of what Michael Pittman Jr., Germie Bernard, and Roman Wilson do. If those three can help him out," Kaboly said. "But I think he needs to turn into the top 10 receiver we saw flashes of last year. Let’s admit he did not have the greatest of seasons last year, but it was not his fault. When you get double covered and bracketed all the time and you have no other choice, you kind of get frustrated. I think if DK puts up 1,200 yards and 8 to 10 touchdowns, I think that is very attainable."

Those moves show the Steelers are not just trying to patch holes, but actively reshape the identity of their passing game around Rodgers' final ride in 2026. With Pittman bringing proven consistency and Bernard adding youth and explosiveness, the offense suddenly looks deeper and more balanced than it did a year ago.

If those additions translate on the field, it takes a lot of pressure off Metcalf to be the only true difference maker in the passing attack.

That kind of support could be exactly what unlocks a more efficient, more dangerous version of this Steelers offense in 2026. Of course the addition of Mike McCarthy will help also. If Metcalf gets anywhere close to the numbers Kaboly rattled off, then it would be viewed as a great season.
