The Pittsburgh Steelers made Germie Bernard one of the most talked-about rookies in the entire 2026 draft class when they traded up to select the Alabama wide receiver in the second round, and everything coming out of Organized Team Activities and minicamp has been overwhelmingly positive. However, a new eye-opening rookie report from one of the most respected insiders covering this team just put some important context around what Bernard is actually walking into, and Steelers fans need to hear it before training camp opens.

Mike DeFabo of The Athletic spent time breaking down the entire 2026 rookie class after OTAs and minicamp wrapped up, and his assessment of Bernard is one that cuts right to the heart of what this offense needs from the young receiver. DeFabo came away impressed with what he saw from the second-round pick, noting his confident hands, good body control near the sideline, and the kind of well-rounded versatility that fits perfectly into Mike McCarthy's offense. DeFabo also raised a challenge that no amount of highlight reel catches during OTAs can solve though. In a recent piece for The Athletic, DeFabo shared his thoughts.
"Bernard's challenge will be to form chemistry with [Aaron] Rodgers, who isn't the most rookie-friendly QB, and push [Roman] Wilson for playing time," DeFabo explained.
That is a simple sentence, but it carries enormous weight when you understand what it actually means. Aaron Rodgers has never been the kind of quarterback who hands playing time to a young receiver just because the coaching staff is excited about him. He demands precision. He demands timing. He demands that his receivers be exactly where he expects them to be on every single route, and when they are not, the ball goes somewhere else. That has been well documented throughout his entire career and it is not going to change in his final NFL season.

As SteelerNation has covered, Bernard has been working hard to earn Rodgers' trust throughout the offseason and the early returns have been encouraging, but earning trust in shorts and helmets during OTAs is a completely different challenge than earning it when the lights come on and the hits are real.
Steelers' Bernard Must Earn Every Snap In 2026
The other layer to DeFabo's take is the Roman Wilson factor. Wilson has spent two years waiting for his opportunity in Pittsburgh and during the offseason program, he was getting almost all of the first-team reps in three receiver sets. That is not nothing. Wilson has been here. He knows the system. He knows the personnel. And he has every motivation in the world to make sure Bernard does not simply walk in and take what he has been working toward. DeFabo made it clear that one way or another, Bernard will have a role in the rotation this year. The question is how much he plays and how often he is deployed in the high leverage situations that actually matter when the games count.
DeFabo's overall impression of Bernard was positive. He compared him in some ways to JuJu Smith-Schuster, a receiver who was not going to wow you with any single part of his game, but when you packaged it all together, was a well-rounded and versatile weapon who found ways to make an impact. Bernard had just one drop at Alabama last season, his hands are reliable, and his body control near the sideline was evident throughout the offseason program. The talent is absolutely there. The path to playing time is just going to require patience, precision, and the kind of chemistry with Rodgers that only comes from putting in the work every single day between now and Week 1.

Training camp in Latrobe is where this competition gets real and where Bernard will either prove DeFabo's concerns right or silence them entirely. Steelers fans should be watching this one closely.
