The Pittsburgh Steelers are a team that is full of storylines heading into 2026 training camp. That is always going to be the case with a team that is being quarterbacked by Aaron Rodgers that also has a new head coach, so it's par for the course. Outside of Rodgers reconnecting with his former head coach, fans will also be paying attention to a lot of the younger guys on the roster. This will include the inexperienced players from previous draft classes that have not quite found their footing on the team or in the NFL yet, and the rookies that were drafted this past April.

Younger players developing is important to the franchise due to the age of the current roster. That is why fans are excited to see what Germie Bernard and Roman Wilson can do. They will be battling for the third wide receiver spot on the depth chart. This will be an important position battle for Wilson after he did not have the best relationship with Rodgers during the 2025 season, and that led to him being a healthy scratch near the end of the year.
Beat writer Chris Carter joined 93.7 The Fan on Friday morning, and he was asked about Wilson and this upcoming training camp. He spoke about whether or not Wilson's spot on the roster is in jeopardy as the team prepares for Latrobe.
"I'd say for this roster, yes," Carter said. "Because I think he still has the speed to be a threat on the offense as a fourth or fifth wide receiver. I don't know that Roman Wilson would get passed up necessarily by Ben Skowronek or Eli Heidenreich or Kaden Wetjen. I do think as far as his long-term job, it's very much on the line. If he can prove this year that he's competition for Germie Bernard and the two of them can kind of duke it out for the third wide receiver spot, that'll be a good sign that Roman Wilson is showing progress. The Steelers can be like, 'Okay, we kind of want him as a part of this rotation of wide receivers.'"
Carter believes that Wilson is going to be on the roster for the Steelers in 2026 no matter what, but there is a chance that his long-term job could be in jeopardy if he does not perform well. He would be kept for depth purposes if he has a disappointing camp and preseason, but his chances of being with the Steelers past the 2027 season would be near zero.

Wilson and Bernard will be battling for that third spot, and the coaching staff needs to at least see promising signs from Wilson. He needs to be able to keep it close with Bernard, or win the battle, to be a part of the rotation on the outside. Carter continued on the possibilities for Wilson's future.
"If it's clear that Bernard's receiver number three, Wilson doesn't have much to say about [it], they'll keep him on the roster because they need depth," Carter said. "But, I think next year would be his last year as a Pittsburgh Steeler at that point."
The 2027 season marks the end of Wilson's rookie deal with the Steelers, and it would likely be his final season with the franchise if he does not find a way to break through. That might be something he would welcome based on the way things have gone in Pittsburgh.

Steelers' Roman Wilson Should Welcome A Change Of Scenery
If things do not go Wilson's way leading up to the 2026 season, he should want out of Pittsburgh. He was the only wide receiver in Pittsburgh during the 2025 season that could consistently get separation, yet he was a few inches or a yard off with where he was supposed to be so Rodgers had him banished to the sideline. Maybe the quarterback should have to adjust a little bit, regardless of what he has accomplished. This coaching staff will hopefully approach that situation in a wiser manner.
What do you think about the Steelers and Wilson in the foreseeable future? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
