Steelers' Omar Khan Gets New Opportunity To Add Veteran Offensive Piece For Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have spent the last few seasons investing heavily in the offensive line, but one NFL analyst believes General Manager Omar Khan shouldn't be finished adding to the unit just yet. After surpassing expectations in 2025, Aaron Rodgers is returning for one final season in Pittsburgh, giving the Steelers another opportunity to make a legitimate postseason run. While Rodgers helped guide the team to a 10-7 record and its first AFC North title since 2020, the season ended in familiar fashion with a disappointing home playoff loss to the Houston Texans.

As Rodgers enters what is expected to be the final year of his NFL career, protecting the 42-year-old quarterback has become one of Pittsburgh's biggest priorities. The Steelers are confident in their young offensive line, but not everyone believes the current group has enough proven depth.

That's why Bleacher Report analyst Moe Moton recently suggested Khan should continue strengthening the trenches by signing a veteran offensive lineman before the 2026 season gets underway. The Steelers' projected starting offensive line entering training camp features Troy Fautanu at left tackle, Mason McCormick at left guard, Zach Frazier at center, Spencer Anderson or Brock Hoffman at right guard, and Broderick Jones or rookie Max Iheanachor at right tackle.

On paper, the Steelers don't need another tackle, but given Jones' ongoing neck situation (his playing status remains up in the air after having spinal fusion surgery) and Iheanachor's inexperience, it would make sense for Pittsburgh to acquire a veteran tackle in the event that something happens to either Fautanu or Cook.

"Although Becton started in 14 of 15 outings with the Chargers, he battled knee and hand injuries that may have affected his performances. The 6'7", 363-pound guard also suffered a concussion last year," Moton said. "Los Angeles released him before free agency in March. Becton has an extensive injury history that dates back to his four-year stint with the New York Jets. Yet when healthy, the massive interior lineman can be an asset to a team that needs insurance for an underperforming starter or intends to feature a downhill ground attack in the upcoming campaign."

That uncertainty at right tackle, particularly with Jones' injury status still unresolved, is exactly why Moton believes Khan should add some insurance before the regular season.

Moton believes Pittsburgh would be wise to sign veteran offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, giving the Steelers an experienced option while also providing valuable depth if Jones isn't ready to return.

Steelers Could Get Some Insurance On The Offensive Line

Of course, the biggest concern with Becton is his own injury history. With the uncertainty surrounding Jones, do the Steelers really want to use a roster spot on another tackle with durability questions? To Becton's credit, he started 14 of the 15 games he appeared in during the 2025 season. However, he struggled to adapt to the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive scheme and ultimately failed to live up to expectations. Now, the veteran tackle is looking for a new home in 2026.

The Steelers could add Becton without making a significant financial commitment. He's projected to command roughly $2-3 million on a one-year deal, making him an affordable insurance policy for Pittsburgh's offensive line while also providing valuable veteran depth. It's not a move the Steelers need to make, but it's one of those sneaky additions that could provide valuable insurance as the 2026 season unfolds if they decide to make it.
