The Pittsburgh Steelers will be back together in two weeks as training camp will begin in Latrobe, PA ahead of the 2026 NFL regular season. Head Coach Mike McCarthy enters his first year with the organization looking to lead them back to success, particularly in the playoffs. Many questions still need answered however, as the franchise was busy this offseason adding pieces to the roster and getting used to a brand new coaching staff. If recent history has told fans and pundits anything though, it will not be easy to obtain information about what is going on inside of the locker room.

While we do know Aaron Rodgers will be the starting quarterback for the Black and Gold as he reunites with his former head coach, there are questions surrounding who will be his backup. It is believed that third-year wide receiver Roman Wilson will also be included in the team's plans at WR3, as he looks to turn over a new leaf under a new coaching staff following an underwhelming start to his NFL career. Michael Pittman Jr. is now in town, along with Alabama rookie Germie Bernard, which has once again created multiple storylines in the wide receiver room as a whole.

Team insider Mark Kaboly recently shared a story on the latest episode of Steelers Collective surrounding a former wide receiver of the organization that occurred in the locker room. During the episode, he discussed an encounter with wide receiver Mike Wallace that happened years back. This story proves that the organization really does prefer to keep its cards close to the vest.

β€œI had a Mike Wallace incident, too, where he came after me,” Kaboly said. β€œI was the only one in the locker room too. He’s like screaming, all the players are screaming at me. He looks at Mike Tomlin and says, β€˜Hey Mike, do I have to talk to this guy?’ And Tomlin goes over and goes, β€˜Absolutely not.’ That’s probably a hint for me to exit stage right.”

While the story by Kaboly suggests that things seemed to have stayed calm and was more of a verbal indicator for him to leave the locker room, it does give merit to the narrative surrounding the organization. Keeping things close to the vest is not necessarily a bad thing for them, especially given past locker room issues from wide receivers like Antonio Brown and George Pickens. While that locker room drama and past issues seem to be under better control these days, it may benefit them to keep going about business this way in McCarthy's inaugural season coaching them.

With a new batch of wide receivers in 2026, led by DK Metcalf, it will be interesting to see if this group continues the trend.

Steelers May Have A Master Strategy

While locker room drama has dissipated in recent years, there could be an underlying strategy to keeping things from the media like Wallace apparently did with Kaboly years back. With several new pieces, and many of them being expected to have some significant roles on the 2026 team, it should be expected to see this trend continue. This is especially true given the struggles that Pittsburgh saw at times on offense in the 2025 season. They will now look for a considerable turnaround in 2026.

Former Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace left the team after wanting a bigger paycheck, but that money went to Antonio Brown.

While they finished in the middle of the pack in scoring offense in 2025, the Steelers managed to finish near the bottom of the league at 29th overall in total offense, with an average of 305.6 yards per game. Their offensive-minded head coach will be looking to change that production in 2026 and that could directly relate to playoff success. This is especially true considering they put up just six points in their first-round loss to the Houston Texans.
