Steelers’ DK Metcalf’s Underwhelming 2025 Season Reveals Bigger Problem Than Expected

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a big move ahead of the 2025 season by trading for wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. This move was to add a speedy, big target to the offense and give the Black and Gold some star power. The anticipation as the 2025 offseason rolled on was that he could take a clear-cut No. 1 receiver role in Pittsburgh. However, the team lacked a supporting cast of wideouts, and Metcalf struggled with what he's best at: being a deep threat.

Metcalf experienced his fair share of double-teams and was sometimes a non-factor in games based on all the attention he drew. While that can be a good thing for supporting receivers, Pittsburgh's offense lacked quality depth behind Metcalf. The offensive scheme didn't benefit him either, as oftentimes the plan was for quick hitters and dump-offs. Now, Metcalf will have some more support around him, but will that be enough to replicate some of his best years?

Metcalf registered a career low in receiving yards and targets, though he did serve a two-game suspension because of an altercation with a fan. However, there were many other factors as to why he had one of, if not his worst, years of his career. The Steelers' playbook didn't include as many big-play opportunities as many would've liked for Metcalf, but the conservative nature of the offense didn't necessarily rest solely on the coaching staff. Pro Football Focus' Dalton Wasserman and Max Chadwick dove into receiver rankings for the publication and revealed a concerning stat. 

"In his first season with Pittsburgh, Metcalf led the Steelers with 850 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. His 1.83 yards per route run ranked among the top 30 qualified wide receivers despite posting a career-low 11.3-yard average depth of target because of Aaron Rodgers' conservative tendencies," the summary read.

Rodgers can still sling it if he wants to, but it was clear that Metcalf's usage wasn't what he's used to. For him to be the best player he can be, he must get opportunities downfield. That didn't happen in 2025's offense; whether that is a Rodgers issue or a scheme issue, or both, it doesn't matter. Metcalf needs volume where he's at his best. 

Now, how can the Steelers change the narrative for their No. 1 receiver? It starts with drawing up plays where Metcalf can get open down the field. It starts with being aggressive when it's necessary. Under Head Coach Mike McCarthy's offense, this should be more prevalent. A coach who understands his offensive weapons is what is needed. Metcalf has blazing speed and is much bigger than many traditional deep-ball receivers. 

This is what sets him apart: he can blaze by defenders, but also make contested catches when needed. Another thing is keeping Rodgers protected; the young offensive line has had another year to gel and improve. Some of these plays may require more time to develop; giving Rodgers the time to load up and chuck one down to Metcalf is another factor. Pittsburgh has invested a lot in that area, and if Rodgers wants to play some backyard football, he should have the time to do that. 

What's In Store For The Steelers And Metcalf? 

Obviously, the team will want Metcalf to have a much better season in 2026 than the year prior, and that was addressed when the front office traded for Michael Pittman Jr., and used a second-round pick on Germie Bernard in the 2026 NFL Draft. The additions of more weapons around Metcalf will open up more opportunities to isolate defenders on Metcalf, which could result in more explosive plays. 

Whether it's more talent around him, an offensive-minded coach, or a new set of plays, Metcalf is set up much better to succeed. He'll have to put that into action, but a stat sheet that looks similar to prior years should be expected.
