Surprising Group On The Steelers' Roster Faces Immense Pressure Ahead Of 2026 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers have gone through a ton of changes throughout the 2026 offseason. The most talked about changes have had to do with the coaching staff and the turnover there, but the roster is also going to look fairly different. A few contributors are gone and will be playing elsewhere, while the franchise also had an infusion of youth with a draft class that has 10 players in it. That is a large rookie draft class for any team in the league, and there is a good chance that all 10 drafted rookies do not end up making the final roster.

The rookies that were drafted near the bottom of the event are going to have to work hard to earn a role with the Steelers, while the rookies that were drafted significantly higher are going to be facing some pressure to contribute immediately. Some rookies will start the year off on the bench, but the hope is probably to have several rookies contributing at a high level at some point during the 2026 season.

First-round pick Max Iheanachor is probably going to be a backup, but second-round pick Germie Bernard is going to be expected to be a factor in the passing game almost immediately. This is part of why Justin Melo of SI named the Steelers as one of the top draft classes in the league facing the most pressure.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers are all-in on the 2026 season after hiring Mike McCarthy as head coach and welcoming Aaron Rodgers back at quarterback," Melo wrote. "They'll need immediate contributions from their rookie class to get them where they want to go. First-round offensive tackle Max Iheanachor provides insurance for the injury situation surrounding regular starter Broderick Jones (veteran Dylan Cook is also a factor at offensive tackle)."

Melo spoke about Iheanachor at first, and there is a chance he could play fairly early on. Broderick Jones is a Physically Unable To Perform (PUP) list candidate to open the season, and Cook has not played a ton. He started games at left tackle to finish the 2025 season for Pittsburgh, but now he is switching to the right side. If things go poorly, Iheanachor could be on the field early in his rookie year with Jones probably not being available.

Bernard is facing the pressure that comes with being a second-round pick, but he also has to catch passes from Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback is known for being demanding of his wide receivers, and it is crucial that the two get off on the same page.

"Second-round pick Germie Bernard was arguably the most pro-ready wide receiver prospect in the entire draft class," Melo wrote. "His skill set should really complement what DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. bring to the table. If Bernard is as advertised underneath the coverage, he'll help maximize Rodgers in the quarterback's age 43 season."

The young wide receiver has been praised heavily so far, but none of that matters if it does not translate to the field during meaningful games. The relationship between him and his quarterback is going to be watched closely throughout the year by fans.

Steelers' Underrated Rookie Is Probably Facing The Most Pressure

One rookie not mentioned by Melo was Riley Nowakowski. He was the team's fifth-round pick, and he is probably going to play some of the most snaps out of the entire rookie class. He is taking over as the fullback/h-back, and he is also expected to be a contributor on special teams. He is going to be a lead blocker in the run game and he is also a threat to catch some balls out of the backfield. He is going to be a big contributor early on, and he should feel the pressure as Pittsburgh is going to rely heavily on the run game.
