"Might Not Be Room": 2 Young Steelers Get Ultimate Warning Before Training Camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers should display a brand new defense in 2026. It's not that a lot of the faces have changed when it comes to the depth chart, but innovative ideas from defensive coordinator Patrick Graham will hopefully lead to the group playing up to its full potential. The franchise's new play-caller on that side of the ball has never had this much talent to work with, so it should be fascinating to see what the unit it capable of moving forward. Communication issues and a ton of inconsistencies are what have plagued the collective for several years now. 

The Steelers have not avoided building in the trenches of late, specifically on the offensive side of the ball. With that said, the defensive front has to be better when it comes to stopping the opposition's rushing attack week-in and week-out. Many of the recent postseason losses have featured massive breakdowns that ended up leading to dominant performances from other teams' running backs.

Pittsburgh brought in Sebastian Joseph-Day on a nice deal that was signed at two years and $11 million. He should be able to step in and perform almost immediately for the Steelers. Guys like Derrick Harmon and Keeanu Benton also should provide some serious depth, with Yahya Black rounding out the talented group that will be led by veteran Cam Heyward.

Because of the many faces already present, it could be very difficult for some others to find themselves making the team. This is what Brooke Pryor looked into for ESPN. When predicting what the 53-man roster could look like at the end of August, the beat writer named the aforementioned five, as well as Dean Lowry and Esezi Otomewo as the final two. This left two younger players on the outside looking in.

"The addition of [Sebastian] Joseph-Day ultimately gives the Steelers more quality, veteran depth on the defensive line, but it means there might not be room for young players in the group -- especially with [Dean] Lowry returning from a preseason ACL tear," Pryor wrote. "Otomewo also came on strong a year ago. With that in mind, 2024 sixth-round pick Logan Lee and 2026 sixth-round pick Gabriel Rubio could be on the outside looking in."

Logan Lee has been with the Steelers dating back to 2024 when he was selected in the sixth round. He has had trouble finding his footing and working his way into some more playing time. Gabriel Rubio was taken in the sixth round as well just back in April. Due to the sheer amount of depth that the unit possesses, it's fair for Pryor to project that both of these guys will be left out. The duo could be strong candidates for the practice squad if this prediction ends up being accurate.

There is always the potential for injuries to disrupt any positional group, so it's something to watch out for as the Steelers go through training camp and the preseason. Lee has a little bit of an experience, but a new coaching staff might prefer to hold onto, and work with, a rookie that was drafted more recently. Regardless, it's going to be difficult for both guys to make a name for themselves due to how many others will be getting reps ahead of them.

The exhibition contests are where both Lee and Rubio could prove that they deserve to make the 53-man roster. Even though the matchups aren't as serious as regular-season games, they mean something to those vying for spots. While the Steelers might hope that both could fall to the practice squad, strong performances in August could also lead to another team swooping in and claiming them off of waivers.

Regardless of how many individuals make the 53-man roster on the defensive front, it can be argued that the unit is one of Pittsburgh's most important moving forward. Stopping the run and getting interior pressure could be key to shutting down the opposition's offense. For Lee and Rubio, they are just hoping they can somehow find a way to slip into the mix.
