Steelers' Drew Allar Finally Agreed To Terms On Rookie Contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been dealing with a surprising contract dispute lately. Everyone expected Joey Porter Jr. to have his negotiations go on for a while, but the third-round quarterback is a different story. Drew Allar was one of very few draft picks to wait until late July to get his rookie contract finalized. That turned out to be a trend, as there were four quarterbacks who refused to put pen to paper on their initial deal for many months as they negotiated for very specific terms for a better deal. 

Luckily, that is now in the past. Before training camp officially started, the Steelers officially reported that Allar has signed his rookie contract and will report to the team at the same time everyone else does.

The total money part of it is not negotiable, as that part is determined by which exact pick you were drafted in. In Allar's case, he was picked 76th overall, and his contract would be worth about $7.1 million throughout the four-year deal. There are plenty of other aspects that can be negotiated, like guaranteed money and clauses that could end up taking away some of these guarantees. 

Clearly, Allar and the Steelers did not see eye to eye on something from the original offer. Odds are the quarterback wanted to squeeze as much guaranteed money out of the team as possible. Over the last couple of years, more and more rookies have been given contracts that are fully guaranteed with others getting increases on that front. That is becoming more and more of a trend lately.

Steelers And Allar Were Waiting On Another Team To Step In

Allar was not the only one negotiating deep into June. There were three other quarterbacks with him, but the main one that the Steelers were focused on was the 65th overall pick: Carson Beck. Pittsburgh's rookie quarterback was waiting to see the deal that Beck got from the Arizona Cardinals to use that as a blueprint as to what exactly he should negotiate and expect to get from Pittsburgh. 

Before the Cardinals started their training camp, Beck signed his contract. Because Arizona is slated to play in the Hall of Fame Game to begin the preseason, it was able to begin camp well before 30 other teams in the NFL. That gave Allar and the Steelers plenty of time to evaluate that contract and work on negotiating a deal similar to that and have him on the field ready to learn by July 29th.
