Completely Unexpected Announcement From Steelers' Mike McCarthy Changes Everything For Mason Rudolph

The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the more intriguing quarterback rooms in the entire NFL, but not because there is a controversy when it comes to who will be starting. The return of Aaron Rodgers cleared up any potential drama as far as first-string goes. However, Will Howard, Mason Rudolph and Drew Allar all provide some very interesting storylines as training camp gets underway. The trio will be battling day-in and day-out throughout late July and August. It's not common for a team to keep four on the 53-man roster, so it's very possible that one of them ends up getting the boot.

There is going to be a legitimate battle between Rudolph and Howard. One has the professional experience, while the other provides hope for the future if he received an opportunity to play meaningful snaps. However, the Steelers are going all-in for the 2026 campaign, and one injury to Rodgers could really change the trajectory of the year. That's why some believe having Rudolph second-in-line would be more beneficial.

Allar is being looked at as more of a project-type quarterback and, because he was just selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, is pretty much a lock to make the initial 53-man roster unless he suffers some sort of injury. Him landing on Injured Reserve (IR) would allow Pittsburgh to keep both Rudolph and Howard. There are a lot of possibilities, and new head coach Mike McCarthy addressed the room on Tuesday morning.

While speaking to the media for the first time in several weeks, the Steelers' leader mentioned something that maybe not everyone was expecting. While Howard took virtually all of the second-team reps during Organized Team Activities (OTAs), he will not be slotted as the backup to start camp. Instead, that honor will be given to the veteran in Rudolph.

"Mason will start off with the second group, and Drew, or Will and Drew will take, you know, take the third group reps, so that's the way we'll start, and we'll just watch things go," McCarthy said. "I really like the room. I've never really looked at it as second or third. You know, you gotta get your starter ready, you know, and the responsibility to get the starter ready is not only on the quarterbacks coach or the play-caller, but it's also on the other quarterbacks."

This is a bit of a surprise based on what many expected the case to be. Now, this could quickly change if Rudolph is not performing at a relatively high level. Still, he will be give the chance to hold onto his backup job for at least another few weeks. It will get very interesting if he plays well. At that point, Howard could turn into a potential roster cut.

Howard has never taken a professional snap. He was injured early on during his rookie season and didn't even get to complete in an exhibition matchup. If he had, things may not be trending the way they are currently. It's also fair to note that Rodgers and Rudolph seem to have a very strong relationship; so, if the future Hall of Famer wants the former third-round pick to hang around, he will.

Rudolph won't be viewed as the quarterback of the future, but he might just be the right guy to step in for a short timeframe if Rodgers does suffer an injury. It also might not hurt to have another experienced signal-caller around when it comes to in-game adjustments and game preparation.

Steelers Would Shock Everyone If Howard Got Cut

Letting Howard go at the end of August would not guarantee that he finds his way back to the practice squad. If he can't beat out Rudolph over the next six weeks or so, the writing may be on the wall for his future with Pittsburgh. A lot of times, veterans get the first crack at things, and that's what might be happening with Rudolph. However, it's beyond interesting nonetheless, especially because this wasn't the setup back in May and June.
