Report: Super Bowl-Winning Safety With Pittsburgh Ties And Steelers Have Mutual Interest In Signing Contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers surprised a lot of fans on Tuesday when it was announced that cornerback/safety Jalen Ramsey would begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. The team's backend of the defense has been in question throughout the offseason due to new faces arriving and DeShon Elliott's recovery from a nasty injury. The defensive backfield could end up being a strength for the organization in 2026, but the health of the unit as a whole will determine just how effective it can be. That's why a lot of curiosity is surrounding just how serious Ramsey's ailment is.

While the original expectation was that the Steelers were going to work Ramsey back slowly from something that occurred during mandatory minicamp, there hasn't been too much talk about what could be done in the event that he misses more time than expected. He is supposed to be a chess piece that will move all over the place, and he adds a ton of versatility to an already-talented group.

Pittsburgh has guys like Sebastian Castro who should get some opportunities to prove themselves while Ramsey is unable to participate in workouts; however, the franchise could also be looking to add another camp body. That seems to potentially be the case at the moment for the Steelers. One-third of the Steelers Collective crew, Noah Strackbein, reported on Wednesday evening that Pittsburgh has some interest in signing a Super Bowl-winning safety that has ties to Pittsburgh. After not playing anywhere during the 2025 campaign, Jordan Whitehead might find his way to Latrobe.

In January of 2025, Whitehead was involved in a pretty serious car accident. This led to some complications, and he ultimately was not on the field for an organization once the 2025 regular season rolled around. Now, according to Strackbein, there is some mutual interest between the two sides as the Steelers look for safety depth and Whitehead looks for another chance.

Whitehead went to the University of Pittsburgh and played there for three years prior to making the jump to the NFL. A lot of football fans are aware that the Steelers love local ties, so the interest in Whitehead isn't necessary shocking. The real question will be surrounding his health and if he is still in shape after missing so much time.

This would be a relatively intriguing signing if it ends up happening. Drafted in the fourth round back in 2018 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the safety was once viewed as an up-and-coming star. He has played in 105 career games and totaled 11 interceptions throughout his career. The Steelers could use a little more experience at the free safety position specifically, and Whitehead would bring that.

This would be nothing more than a one-year agreement, but it's certainly fascinating because he has stepped on a football field to compete since very late in the 2024 calendar year. Pittsburgh needs some depth, and Whitehead needs a chance. This seems like it could be the perfect pairing if the mutual interest ends up turning into pen being put to paper.

Steelers Signing Whitehead Would Be A Low-Risk High-Reward Move

No one one just what Whitehead has left, especially after a serious off-the-field accident that required neck surgery. However, he might get a chance to prove himself very soon as Pittsburgh is apparently communicating with him. Fans will have to wait and see where it goes, but it is looking like another veteran safety could be thrown into the mix pretty soon if everything gets worked out.
